Madaline Harrigan, 92, a long-time resident of Girard, passed away at 9:15 p.m., Monday, August 26, 2013 at the Girard Medical Center in Girard.
Madaline was born April 26, 1921 in Radley, Kansas, a daughter of John and Mary (Deloney) Raineri. She attended Radley Schools and graduated from Frontenac High School in 1938. Throughout her life, she attended the Kansas State Teachers College, now Pittsburg State University, as an auditing student in her constant quest for enlightenment.
She married Jack W. Harrigan on December 13, 1942 in Fort Scott, Kansas. He preceded her in death on November 14, 1990.
A true jack of all trades, Madaline served as a Brownie, Boy and Girl Scout troop leader, a Vacation Bible School instructor, a Crawford County EFNEP nutrition educator, a 4-H sewing teacher, a camp counselor for the Christian Hills Church Camp, a former Manager of the Girard Public Pool, a clerk at Sauer's Department Store, a secretary for the Girard Chamber of Commerce, a member of the Democratic Election board, a volunteer for the Elm Acres Children Home, a Pink Lady volunteer for the Girard Medical Hospital, and a youth mentor at Haderlein Elementary School.
Survivors are Marilyn (Harrigan) Flook and husband Frank, now deceased, Susan (Harrigan) Thom and husband Craig, of Girard, John Harrigan and wife Patty of Prairie Village, KS, and Stephen Dilley, of Girard.
Grandchildren include Laura (Harrigan) Lyons and husband Connor, of Overland Park, KS, Annie Harrigan, of Kansas City, KS, and Jack Harrigan, attending the University of Kansas. Sarah (Thom) Sullivan and husband Scott, of Centerton, AR, Curtis Thom, of Shawnee, KS, and her beloved Great Granddaughter Aubrey Sullivan, of Centeron, AR.
Madaline is also survived by Patricia (Harrigan) Aldrich, the niece of Jack Harrigan, and husband Joe, of Winnemuccca, NV, and her foster children Joy (Peterson) Anckner and husband Joe, of Lindsborg, KS, Lawrence Dilley, of Broken Arrow, OK, now deceased, and Bill Edwards of Crawford County.
She also sponsored foreign exchange students Leonardo Ciammella from Argentina, Michel Friedhofer from Brazil, Kazuhiro Tsuchiya from Japan, Boris Simonovski of Croatia, and Sardi Gjollma from Albania, whom she stayed in contact with until her death.
Her dedication and commitment to her community, her church and her family will serve as inspiration to all of us for many years to come.
Madaline lived life to the fullest, with courage and conviction in all things she supported, until the last day of her life. She died fulfilled in all things, having enjoyed a life certainly lived under her own terms.
The family would like to thank her caregivers Helen McCormack and Marsha Spencer, the staff of the West Ridge Assisted Living Center, Dr. Lisa Salvador and the staff of the Girard Medical Center, for all of their continued care and compassion shown to Madaline throughout her last years.
Friends are invited to the family visitation at 7:00 pm, on Friday, August 30, 2013. The gathering will be held at 502 S. Sinnet, in Girard, KS, with salami sandwiches and beer to be served, at the specific request of the departed.
Funeral services will then be held on Saturday, August, 31st, at 11:00 am, at First Christian Church, 119 N. Summit, in Girard, with Reverend Doug Amend officiating. All in attendance are invited to join the family for lunch, immediately following this celebration of life.
