Died: June 3, 2018; in Morris, IL

Gerald Eugene Matteson, 85, of Morris, Illinois peacefully passed away on Sunday, June 3, 2018 at Park Pointe Healthcare & Rehab Center in Morris.

Born July 22, 1932 in Morris, Gerald (Gerry, Buddy) was educated in Morris, graduating from Morris High School with the class of 1950. He was married to his companion and wife Vivian Nadine (n e Burklow) for 62 years. Gerry met Nadine after returning from his service in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. They met at the Paramount Skating Arena in Morris, continuing to date until their engagement and marriage at the First United Methodist Church in Morris on February 26, 1956.

Gerry purchased from his Uncle Price Matteson, a hardware store on Liberty Street in Morris in 1955. He was one of the first members of the True Value Hardware Store cooperative of Chicago. Gerry grew the hardware store business to a larger location on the north side of Morris and into another store in Coal City. Gerry's son, Steven Matteson continues to operate three family Ace Hardware stores in Morris, Minooka and Diamond, Illinois.

Gerry was a goal-driven individual, completing the Chicago Marathon in 1982. And after his retirement in 1988, he embarked on the life-changing hike of the Appalachian Trail. He started his hike on Springer Mountain in Georgia in April, 1988 and finished the hike, 2,134 miles later, at Mount Katahdin in Maine in August, 1988.

Gerry dedicated hours of time and talent to the United Methodist Church in Morris. He was a member of the Methodist Men and was one of the first men in the church to perform as a Stephen's Minister. Gerry, always supporting his community, served as Saratoga School District 60C board president while his children attended there. He was interested in everything out-of-doors, and enjoyed teaching his children and grandchildren about the history of Morris, fossils, birds, fungi, Boy Scouts, M*A*S*H, hockey, and negotiating at the Kane County Flea Market. After retirement, he enjoyed repairing and restoring antique lamps, and collecting antique tools and unique lamp finials.

Gerry was a consummate blood donor and organizer of blood donations for the American Red Cross. In his lifetime Gerry donated in excess of 15 gallons of A negative blood.

Gerry is survived by his wife, Nadine of 62 years; sons, Mike Matteson and Steve (Holly) Matteson; daughters, Sarah (Randall) Edwards and Jean Matteson; beloved grandchildren, Emily (Andrew) Freeman, Marie Matteson, Mathew Schlehuber, Katie Edwards, Neal Edwards; great granddaughter, Sylvia Freeman; and sister, Janaye (Robert) Houghton.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Ralph and Lucille Matteson; sister, June Olson; and brother, Robert Matteson.

Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church in Morris.

Visitation will be held Thursday, June 7, 2018 4:00 to 7:00 p.m., at the First United Methodist Church, 118 W. Jackson St., Morris.
