Elzanna D. Hughes, age 75, of Bucyrus and formerly of Mount Gilead, passed away Wednesday evening, October 2, 2013 at her residence following an extended illness.
On June 24, 1938, Elzanna was born in Columbus, OH, the daughter of the late Thomas M. and Elzanna Mae (Kelling) Driscoll. She graduated from Linden-McKinley High School in Columbus, OH.
While dating another guy, Elzanna met a persistent young man by the name of Harry Harold Hughes Jr. They began dating and were married on January 25, 1958 in Columbus. They shared over 22 very special years together before he preceded her in death on June 7, 1980.
Elzanna worked in human resources and management for a majority of her life at Abbott in Iberia and H.P.M. in Mount Gilead. She was a people person who loved her job and going above and beyond for those she worked for and with.
For many years she attended the Lighthouse Christian Center in Edison. In her free time she loved to draw, often creating beautiful works of art from memory. She also enjoyed time with her special Pomeranian, Cody, whom she had for about 15 years.
Elzanna treasured being a mom, grandma, and great grandma. She possessed a very special gift with babies. One of her dreams was to become a pediatric nurse, but she was never able to follow through with that. After her mother passed away, Elzanna made it a point to begin a family tradition for everyone to get together for holidays and many other occasions. They enjoyed picnics, cookouts, and just being together. She created a very tight, special bond amongst her family.
She was an extremely tough woman with a beautiful, loving heart. She carried herself with dignity, always caring for others and wanting the best for her family.
Elzanna will be dearly missed by her three children: Gina Hughes of Wauseon, Ken (Patricia) Hughes of Bucyrus, Theresa Nelson of Galion; seven grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; two sisters: Anna Mae Barker of Columbus, and Mary Ann (Gerland) Hay of Columbus.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a grandson; a great grandson; and her brother, Thomas Driscoll Jr.
The Hughes family will greet friends from 2 – 4 p.m. on Sunday, October 6, 2013 at the Snyder Funeral Home, Craven Chapel, 67 N. Main St., Mount Gilead. Services celebrating her life will be held there at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, October 7, 2013 with close family friend Douglas Sipe officiating. Burial will follow in Rivercliff Cemetery.
Memorial contributions, if desired, may be made to the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
