Goldie M. McLaughlin, age 90, of Fredericktown passed away Tuesday, February 5, 2013 in the Laurels of Mount Vernon following a long illness.
She was born May 30, 1922 in Morrow County, the daughter of Jacob and Edna (Case) Corwin.
Over the years, Goldie worked at Ohio Brass, Ward Kraft and Stevens Manufacturing, but she was most committed to being a wife and mother. Everywhere she went, she was referred to as mom or grandma. Goldie honed in on her homemaking skills as a wonderful baker. Known for her zucchini bread and cherry pies, she found her niche where she could barter her baked goods for favors, remolding work and was even known to use them to bribe her way out of a traffic ticket.
Goldie was also a talented seamstress, making or altering many of her own clothes. She fashioned it all from wedding gowns and tuxedos to mother-daughter dresses out of seed sacks. For many years, she was the most popular alterations seamstress, always helping fix some garment. Goldie once altered a nurse's dress while in her hospital bed, and a groom's dress slacks before walking down the aisle. She simply never left the house without a needle and thread in her pocketbook.
Goldie also adored dolls, and collected hundreds of them.
A lifelong area resident, Goldie was a member of Woodville Grace Brethren Church and First Church of God in Fredericktown, and American Legion Post #500 Auxiliary.
She is survived by her loving husband of 69 years, Donald E. McLaughlin of Fredericktown, two children Carolyn A. & Rodney Shofner of Mansfield and Donald E., Jr. and Connie McLaughlin of Goodyear, Arizona; foster children Karen and Garrel Chevalier all of Fredericktown; four grandchildren Scott and Terry Finley, Christopher McLaughlin, Donia McLaughlin, and Faith McLaughlin; two foster grandchildren Nathan Chevalier and Nicole and Jay Robertson; seven great grandchildren including Joshua and Jennifer Finley, and one great great grandson. Also surviving are a nephew Charles and niece Shirley.
Goldie was preceded in death by a brother Charley Corwin and a sister Betty Corwin.
Friends may call Sunday, February 10, 2013 from 2-6 pm in the Bellville Snyder Funeral home where the funeral service will be held Monday at 11 am. Ministers Don and Ray Lynn will officiate and burial follow in Forest Cemetery, Fredericktown.
