Joyce F. ""Joy"" Tschudi, of Mount Gilead, died early Monday morning, January 28, 2013, at the Riverside Methodist Hospital following a brief illness. She was 72 years of age.
On October 10, 1940, Joy was born in Dayton, Ohio, one of three children of the late Franklin and Dorothy (Lipscomb) Finck. She graduated from Trotwood Madison High School in Dayton in the Class of 1958.
Shortly after graduating, Joy attended the wedding of one of her cousins, where she was introduced to the groom's best man, Gerald Tschudi, and anyone who knew Jerry understands that her life would never be the same from that day forward. They were married on August 13, 1960. They shared over 45 wonderful years of marriage and lovingly raised four children. He preceded her in death on September 25, 2005.
After moving as a family to Mount Gilead in 1967, Joy began working for the Morrow County Sentinel, where she sold classified advertisements to local businesses for over 10 years. Next, she was the office manager for David Cook's Nationwide Insurance Agency in Mount Gilead. Lastly, she served as the deputy treasurer for Morrow County for 15 years, until her retirement in 2000.
Dedicated to her church family, Joy was an active member of the Trinity United Methodist Church, where she served in many leadership positions and taught Sunday School for many years.
Giving back to her community, Joy served on the board of the Morrow County Chapter of the American Red Cross, where she helped coordinate their annual spaghetti dinner fund raiser, worked the blood mobile at the Trinity United Methodist Church, was a past chapter chairman and earned the Clara Barton Award. She also was a member of Beta Progress, the Red Hat Society, was active in the local Republican Party, and enjoyed her Ladies Bridge Club.
Taking great pride in her yard, Joy enjoyed gardening and most especially growing her geraniums. She also loved decorating, trying to put a little flare and color everywhere she went.
Most important of all to Joy was her beloved family, and they will forever be grateful for their loving mother, Nana and great Nana. She also loved playing games with her grandchildren.
There are many ways you could describe Joy, ""joyful, elegant, classy""…""unique""…""sparkly""…""a stubborn pain in the a**""… ""humorous"". Or you could simply call her ""colorful"" and every one of you will have a different thought of Joy that would be befitting. She always gave you the warmest of welcomes, and her bright and cheerful smile was infectious.
She will be dearly missed by her four children: Janae (Tom) Tschudi-Evatt of Stafford, VA, Jefre (Cora Marie) Tschudi of LaPlata, MD, Jennifer (David) Simpson of Mount Gilead, Sgt. Jonathan Tschudi; 8 grandchildren: Gregory (Leilani) , Garrett, Grayson, Giovanna, Lilianna, Graham, Gabriel, and Greer; one great-grandchild, Averie; two brothers: Michael (Kathy) Finck of Sunbury, and Jack Finck of Wadesville, IN; several nieces and nephews; and countless dear friends.
Memorial services celebrating Joy's life will be held on Friday, February 1st, at 12:30 p.m. at the Trinity United Methodist Church, 75 E. High St., Mount Gilead, with Rev. Lori Burdette-Steele officiating. Immediately following her services will be a reception and luncheon in the fellowship hall of the church.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Trinity United Methodist Church (address above) and the American Red Cross, c/o Morrow County Chapter, 37 W. Center St., Mount Gilead, OH 43338.
