Shirley J. Cole Norman, age 77, of Galion and formerly of Cardington, passed away Wednesday morning, July 17, 2013, at the Mill Creek Nursing and Rehab Center in Galion following an extended illness.
On August 1, 1935, Shirley was born in Morrow County, one of seven children of the late Franklin "Jay" and Enola (Ritter) Foltz.
Shirley left school early to marry the young man who caught her eye, Herbert "Buck" Cole, on August 4, 1951. Together they raised four daughters and a son, and she was a loving homemaker for them, making sure all of their needs were taken care of. Their marriage flourished for 19 years until he passed away unexpectedly in 1970.
For many years, Shirley provided in home health care for the elderly. She also worked for Morrow County Services to assist older citizens of the county. She truly loved helping others, and being "a caregiver was her calling".
Later in life, Shirley was married to William "Bill" Norman for 29 years until his passing in 2000.
She will be missed by her four daughters, one son and their families: Linda Studler of Barstow, California, Deborah (Roger) Counts of Bellville, Diana (John) Johnson of Canal Winchester, Judy Lilly of Galion, and Terry (Julie) Cole of New Bloomington; eight grandchildren: Tracy Osborne and Kelly Osborne of Barstow, CA, Shanann Lilly and Amanda Lilly of Galion, Michell Thompson of Morrow, Jason Garber of Bellville, Kristin Perry of Lithopolis, and Branya Cole of Marion; six great-grandchildren: Alexis, Dylan, Khristian, Ellie, Philip and Jace; two great-great-grandchildren: Marianna and Larissa; two siblings: Franklin (Geraldine) Foltz of Cardington and Nancy Cole of Mount Gilead; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Including her husband and parents, Shirley was preceded in death by her three brothers: Jay "Dude" Foltz, Ronald Foltz, and James Foltz; and a sister, Janet Foltz Cole.
Her family will greet friends from 4 – 7 p.m. on Friday, July 19th, at the Snyder Funeral Home, 76 S. Main St., Mount Gilead. Funeral services honoring her life will also be held there on Saturday at 11:00 a.m., with Pastor Ben Pletcher. Burial will follow in Glendale Cemetery in Cardington.
