Douglas D. ""Smiley"" West, age 62, of Edison, died Friday morning, November 1, 2013, at home surrounded by his loving family following a brief battle with cancer.

Doug was born in Galion, Ohio on May 19, 1951, the second of four children of Marjorie (Jackson) West and the late Raymond ""R.D."" West. A lifelong resident of Morrow County, he graduated from Mount Gilead High School in the Class of 1969.

Doug met his wife to be, Joyce Seaburn, while both were working at the HPM Plant in Mount Gilead. They were married on February 4, 1977, at the Trinity United Methodist Church in the middle of a blizzard. Together they shared over 36 years of marriage and lovingly raised three children.

After working at HPM, Doug worked at Dresser Industries and JG Clark, both in Marion, and TRW Automotive in Mount Vernon. He was a member and union steward of the United Auto Workers Union.

A car enthusiast, Doug loved most anything that had to do with cars: everything from car magazines to model cars. His favorite car of all time was his Z28 Camaro. He also enjoyed collecting model trains with his brother, Lee.

Doug also enjoyed rooting for his beloved Ohio State Buckeyes in football and basketball, and for the Cleveland Indians and Columbus Blue Jackets.

Doug's most memorable trait, though, was his infectious smile. He was ""always smiling,"" which brightened the day of everyone around him. Known as ""Smiley"" by his friends and co-workers, he even passed down his great smile to his children.

He will be dearly missed by his wife, Joyce West of Edison; three children: Lisa West of Las Vegas, Nevada, Douglas ""Doc"" West II, and Tim (Akosua) West, both of Columbus; a precious granddaughter, Annobea West; his mother, Marjorie West of Marengo; three siblings: Jackie (Don) Gruber, Susan Riley, and Lee (Shirley) West; and several nieces and nephews.

The West family will greet friends from 4 – 7 p.m. on Monday, November 4th, at the Snyder Funeral Home, Craven Chapel, 67 N. Main St., Mount Gilead. Services honoring his life were observed at his graveside in Caledonia Cemetery, on Tuesday, at 10:30 a.m., with Hospice Chaplain Dave Matos officiating.
