Viola Katherine Betts, age 97 of Cardington, died Thursday evening, March 13, 2014 at Morrow County Hospital. She was born on August 26, 1916 in Marion County to the late David and Henrietta (Beckel) Kramer.
Viola attended for eight years a one-room school, Hickory Corners, the same school her father attended. She then became a student at the Cardington High School in 1931 and graduated with the Class of 1935.
On June 20, 1936, Viola married Paul Monroe Betts in Greenup, Kentucky who preceded her in death on August 1, 1999.
Viola worked at the Busy Bee Restaurant as a cook and a pie baker. She loved to bowl, play cards and enjoyed working with flowers and gardening. Viola was a member of the Cardington and Waldo Senior Citizen's organizations. Viola joined the Center United Methodist Church in 1940 and was an active member until she became ill.
Viola is survived by her three daughters: Janet (Jim) Speicher of Kokomo, Indiana, Carol (Jon) Yake of Orient, Ohio, and Pauline (Lowell) Yake of Mount Gilead; 8 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great grandchildren; one sister, Doris Kirk of Prospect; several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
In addition to her husband and parents, Viola was preceded in death by her two brothers, Lester and Harold Kramer; one sister, Vesta Ruth; and a son-in-law, Don Ocker.
Viola will be remembered as a loving wife, a devoted mother and grandmother, and a caring friend.
Friends may call on Monday, March 17, 2014 from 4:00 to 7:00 pm at Gompf Funeral Home, 440 South Center Street in Cardington. The funeral service will be held in the funeral home on Tuesday, March 18, 2014 at 11:00 AM. Pastor Jerrie Bell-Brion will officiate. Following the service the burial will take place in the Glendale Union Cemetery.
