Bethel Smith, age 85 of Marengo, passed away Saturday evening March 22, 2014 at Bennington Glen Nursing Center in Marengo.
He was born on October 16, 1928 in Soft Shell, Kentucky to the late Grover and Rosanah (Combs) Smith. Bethel began his career working for his father on a 100 acre farm before joining the Army and serving for two years. He then spent time working in Maine picking up potatoes in the fields before settling into his lifelong vocation as a carpenter molding the rough wood into a thing of beauty with his hands and tools. He enjoyed being outdoors doing things in the yard and around the house rather than being inside unable to enjoy the beauty of nature.
He is survived by his wife of 45 years: Peggy (Lloyd) Smith and they were married December 28, 1968 in Clintwood, Va.; sons: John Michael Smith of Columbus, Jared William (Janette) Smith of Marengo; daughter: Rebecca Louise (Chester) Hazelton of Delaware; grandchildren and great grandchildren; sisters: Eva Smith, Louise Webb, Vonda Lee Hall, Verna Fraley, Phyllis Slone all of Kentucky.
Preceded in death by son: Paul David Smith in 2008: brothers: Ernest, John, Hillard Smith; sisters: Gladys Williams, Ruth Fair, and his twin Elsie Ritchie.
Friends may call Tuesday from 5-8 p.m. at the DeVore-Snyder Funeral Home, SR 3 at 61, Sunbury where services will be held Wednesday 11 a.m. and interment will follow in the Marengo Cemetery.
