R. Doyle Smith

Cardington: Doyle Smith, age 83 of Cardington died Friday, May 9, 2014 at his home. He was born on July 8, 1930 to the late Austin and Ada (Schwartz) Smith.

Doyle married Marilyn Bell on July 5, 1953 in Iberia. She preceded him in death on January 26, 2013.

Doyle was a 1948 graduate of the Cardington-Lincoln High School. He entered into the U.S. Army on January 10, 1949 and was an honorable discharge on January 9, 1952 after serving in Korea. He then went to work at the Marion Engineering Depot and was later transferred to the General Services Administration until he retired in 1975. Doyle was also a lifelong farmer.

Doyle was an active member of the American Legion Post #97 and served with the Auxiliary Ohio State Highway Patrol. Doyle loved this country that he served and honored all veterans with great respect.

Doyle loved to hear the horns blow when friends drove by his house as he was working in the eye-catching garden and bountiful blackberry patch. He enjoyed watching the Buckeye's, getting in a round of golf with friends, woodworking, catching (and eating) Walleye, but most of all helping family and friends in any way he could.

Doyle is survived by two sons, Steven Smith of Marion and Roger (Marianne) Smith of Allen, Texas; two grandchildren, Rodney Smith and Jennifer Smith; one great-grandson, Caden Smith; sister, Ruth Farmer of Delaware; brother, Marvin Smith of Marion.

In addition to his wife and parents, Doyle was preceded in death by one brother, Earl Smith.

Friends may call on Tuesday, May13, 2014 from 6:00 to 8:00 pm at Gompf Funeral Home, 440 Center Street in Cardington. The funeral service will be held Wednesday, May 14, 2014 at the funeral home at 11:00 am. Following the service the burial will take place in the Glendale Cemetery with full military honors.
