Howard W. Saunders, age 76 of Marengo, died Saturday morning December 15, 2012 at Knox Community Hospital in Mount Vernon.
He was born on August 28, 1936 in Marengo to the late Noah and Gladys (McNichol) Saunders. He was a 1954 graduate of Marengo High School and a retired truck driver for Snyder Milling with 53 years of service retiring in 2006. He was a longtime member of NRA, Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, Safari Club International .
Howard was an outdoorsman who enjoyed fishing and hunting. Howard and Jeannette had taken 6 trips to Africa, numerous trips to Canada, Texas, Wyoming to spend time hunting. One of his greatest thrills was getting a Mountain Reed Buck that he hunted for 7 days getting it on their last night in Africa. Howard has spent the last 8 year wintering in Florida enjoying his time fishing there.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years: Jeannette Belcher Saunders and they were married January 5, 1958 in Marengo; sons: Lennie (Lisa) Saunders of Mount Gilead, Ted (Diane) Saunders of Marengo; grandchildren: Heather, Andy, Nate, Ben; great-grandchildren: Cassy, Hannah, David, Barrett and one on the way; sisters: Martha Sherman, Linda Shoewalter both of Mount Gilead.
He was preceded in death by a sister: Jo Ann Dowis.
Friends may call Tuesday from 11 a.m.- 1 p.m. at the DeVore-Snyder Funeral Home, SR 3 at 61, Sunbury with services to follow at 1 p.m. with Matt Mailey officiating. Interment will follow in the Bloomfield Cemetery.
