Alice Edna Pickering, 83, of Galion died Sunday, Feb. 10, 2013 at home.
Born Dec. 26, 1929 in Galion, she was the daughter of the late Clarence Elwood Meek and Edna Mae (Leaply) Meek. She was preceded in death on Mar. 14, 2008 by her husband, John Roy Pickering, whom she married on June 15, 1948.
Alice was a graduate of Iberia High School in 1948. She modeled shoes for J & H Shoe Shop and worked at Wright's Sandwich Shop in Galion. She and John owned and operated a grocery and gas station in West Point. She worked for Victor Huguenin at Huguenin's Drug Store, J.C. Penny Company in Galion and retired from the North Electric Company and while there she was sent to Milan, Italy and Pennsylvania. She and John owned and operated the Big Four General Store at the depot in Galion, later moving it to South Columbus Street in Galion renaming it South Columbus Street General Store. They sold dry goods including heritage lace curtains, antiques and gift items. They also hosted square dances in their barn in the early 1980's.
Alice's interests included sewing and gardening and she was a member of the Green Thumb Garden Club and Iberia Tots and Toddlers Mother's Club for over 45 years. She was a brilliant, bright and active person and enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren. Alice and John were instrumental in starting the Pioneer Joint Vocational School, working very hard, going door-to-door, talking to friends and neighbors all over Morrow County promoting the new vocational school.
Surviving are one daughter and son-in-law with whom she made her home, Jennifer and Monte Fried of Galion; two daughters-in-law, Marcia Pickering of Mt. Gilead and Cheryl Pickering of Galion; 10 grandchildren, Amy (Matt) Buzard, Jared, Travis and Carrie Pickering, Tolly (Brenner) Bockbrader, Nathan, Paul and Alyssa Pickering, Haley Johnson and Blair Whitaker; seven great grandchildren, Jason and Troy Bockbrader, Brenya and Cohen Johnson and Madison Pickering, Ryleigh Pickering and Taylor Marie Pickering; four sisters-in-law, Vee TyRee of Galion, Carol Arter of Crestline, Shirley Meek of Fla. and Jean Meek of Tenn.; two brothers-in-law, Ron Baker of Galion and Ronald (Joan) Saum of Lordstown and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband and parents, she is also preceded in death by two sons, Frederick and Timothy Pickering; two grandsons, Toddias Pickering and Clinton Whitaker; four brothers, Art, Boyd (Bud), Lowell and Robert Meek and one sister, Virginia Mann Fenner.
Friends may call from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 16, 2013 at Iberia United Methodist Church. A memorial service will be held at 6 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 16, at Iberia United Methodist Church with Pastor Pat Fruth, officiating. Burial will be in Iberia Cemetery. Funeral arrangements are in the care of Richardson-Davis Funeral Home in Galion.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Ronald McDonald House in Cincinnati or Columbus; MedCentral Hospice of Mansfield or HomeCare Matters Home Health and Hospice in Galion.
