Patrick Neal Sargent "Sarge", age 57, of Marengo, passed away Monday morning, March 3, 2014, at Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus, surrounded by his loving family.

He was born on July 22, 1956, the son of the late Freelin T. and Lona (Tomblin) Sargent in Logan, West Virginia. When Sarge was 17 he left high school and enlisted in the United States Air Force where he served in the Vietnam War. Upon being honorably discharged, Sarge went on to get his GED and take many courses at Columbus State as a journeyman. Sarge worked as a welder, but spent most of his years at Owens Illinois as a machinist.

Before he enlisted in the Air Force Patrick met the love of his life, Shelia Ann Abshire. They got married on September 20, 1974, in Lebanon, KY. Together they shared over 39 years of marriage.

Sarge enjoyed going to the local V.F.W., hunting, fishing, and politics. He was a very strong Democrat and yet had a passion for guns as well. He also found great joy in watching Jimmy Johnson race in NASCAR and letting every family member know when Jimmy won. Most importantly Sarge enjoyed helping anyone and everyone he could while going about it in the most subtle way possible.

Sarge will be remembered as a family man and his love for his grandchildren. He always said, "they brought the best out of me" and the grandkids always called him the greatest grandpa on the planet. He was loving, caring, and loved to joke. At times he was very outspoken, but never made you feel dumb. Sarge even had a unique way of talking you to whatever side he wanted.

He is survived by his wife, Shelia of Marengo; sons: Patrick Jr., Robert Neal (Heather Marie), and John Jonah (Heather Ann) Sargent, all from Marengo, Jason (Michelle) DeAngelo of Mount Vernon, Jeremy Ramey of Sunbury; a daughter, Andreka (Steve) Davis of Marengo, Nicole Fitzsimmons; grandchildren: Alex Neal, Autumn Dawn, and Robert Patrick Sargent, Jonah Michael Wesley Fitzsimmons, Christian Gabriel, Jonathon Joseph Allan, and Brianna Rose Sargent, Andrew, Sebrina, and Alivia Davis, Gavin DeAngelo, Caleb Ramey; brothers: Jerry, and Loren (Nora) Sargent; sisters: Delilah Morris, Deborah Vance, and Donna Sargent; a mother-in-law, Edith Abshire of Columbus.

In addition to his parents, Sarge was preceded in death by a brother, Tommy Sargent; and a father-in-law Sylvester Abshire.

His family will greet friends on Thursday, March 6, 2014, from 4 to 7 pm, at the Snyder Funeral Home, Craven Chapel, 67 North Main Street. Services honoring Sarge's life will be held there on Friday, March 7, 2014, at 2 PM with Pastor Richard Hite officiating. A graveside service will follow immediately with burial taking place in Marengo Cemetery. Military honors will be provided by the active duty Air Force, as well as, the VFW Post 8054 and AmVets Post 87.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Sarge to the U.S. Bank in Marengo, OH to assist the family with final expenses.
