John DO Obituary

John Gabryel Moreno, DO died October 15, 2012 in Chicago; Illinois after a battle with cancer. He was born on June 28, 1979 to Anna Navarrete and Joe Moreno in Stanton, Texas. John was raised in Midland Texas and graduated from Midland High School in 1997. He attended Texas Tech University and was a member of Pi Kappa Phi where he held the position of chaplain. John graduated with honors in Psychology with a minor in Chemistry in December 2000. After the completion of his undergraduate degree John studied for the MCAT while working at West Texas Centers for MHMR in Big Spring Texas, it was during this time that John took up running and would continue running in marathons across the country throughout his brief life. Upon acceptance and completion of medical school at the University of North Texas Health Science Center at Forth Worth Texas, John graduated as a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine in May 2009 and was accepted into the residency program at the University of Chicago in psychiatry in August 2009. John was inspired to study in the field of psychiatry while working for MHMR because he saw a great need for the underserved area of West Texas. It was his hope to return to Midland to practice psychiatry after he completed his residency at the University of Chicago. John was short of graduating from the residency program by less than a year. John never allowed cancer to stop him from reaching his goal of finishing his residency. He took this challenge head strong, never waivering from his goal. He inspired many as he continued his residency while undergoing chemotherapy and radiation treatments. His love of people was always evident, always putting others before himself. John's life was based on treating others with respect and kindness. He lived the words of Mother Teresa of Calcutta "The good you do today, people will often forget tomorrow; do good anyway. Give the world the best you have, and it may never be enough. Give the world the best you've got anyway. You see, in the final analysis, it is between you and God. It was never between you and them anyway." John is survived by his parents, his sister Jessica and brother-in-law James Brandt; Noah and Grace nephew and neice, Regina Moreno, sister, Andrew and Jacob Moreno, brothers and half sister Alexandra Moreno, grandmothers Eulalia Navarrete and Nicha Moreno, numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. There are countless friends John made along his short life, all who are gifts to us. The family of John Moreno wishes to thank Drs. Blase Polite and Philip Connell and Catherine Rogers RN for giving John more time to do what he set out to complete at the University of Chicago. John leaves his fellow residents at the University of Chicago. They were not only his colleagues but his brothers and sisters. We will forever be grateful for your love and support during his difficult journey. A rosary will be said for John on Friday October 26, 2012 at 7:00pm in the chapel at St. Ann's Catholic Church. A memorial service and mass will be said Saturday October 27, 2012 at 1:00pm also at St. Ann's Catholic Church.

To our sister Anna and family. When you miss the physical body of my beloved nephew, only look inside your heart. John will be there with lasting memories of a great son and brother. Remember the smile because that's how you will find him in the presence of his Maker. As alway you remain in our prayers.

I was one of John's mentors in the Psychiatry program at the University of Chicago. He was a man of great bravery and noble character, an excellent and compassionate psychiatrist, and someone I will personally miss very much. His death is a great tragedy to his family, friends, and also to his profession.

I have such delightful memories of John, and Jessica, as young students at Lamar Elementary. He had a shy smile and a tender giving heart...he would have his arms hugged around you Anna. You were such a wonderful family to work with and I remember the love that surrounded your family. My heart is so sad at your loss. I wish you comfort from the memories of a wonderful life well lived.

No one on earth is perfect, but my cousin Johnny was the closest to being perfect. He was a saint hear on earth to many and I can only hope to have the courage and strength that he did to endure what life throws my way as Johnny did. I will miss your dry sense of humor but most of all that wonderful smile! I love you and ask that you give Grandpa and Tia Cindy hugs for me. To my Tia and cousins, I continue to pray for you and love all.
