Betty Jean Caldwell, 64, of Midland, passed away Friday, July 18, 2014 at her residence. She was born August 29, 1949 in El Paso to David and Maria (Garcia) Merrill. Betty lived in El Paso until she was 22. She met and married her husband, Jay, and the couple moved to Monahans, where they lived for the next 36 years. They moved to Midland 6 years ago. She was a homemaker and enjoyed shopping, going to the movies, watching her weekly wrestling programs and daily soap operas, and collecting figurines. She enjoyed giving her time to others by helping deliver with Meals on Wheels. She loved her family and friends. Betty was a sweet, loving mother to her daughter, son-in law, and granddaughter, always willing to share her philosophies and advice. She was always joyful and helpful and loved the many animals that became family pets throughout the years. An excellent cook who never met a stranger, she was always there for her family. She was a "rock" and superhero to her family. She is preceded in death by her parents, David and Maria Merrill; and sister, Rosemary Merrill. Betty is survived by her husband, Jay Caldwell of Midland; daughter, Christina Johnston and husband, John, of Midland; brother, Robert Garcia of El Paso; granddaughter, Kassidy Marie Johnston; nephew, Michael French of Durango, CO; and niece, Daphne French of Raleigh, NC. Visitation will be held Monday, July 21, 2014 from 9 AM - 9 PM at Harkey Funeral Home in Monahans, with the Rosary being recited at 7 PM. Funeral services will be Tuesday, July 22, 2014 at 11 AM at St. John Catholic Church followed by interment at Monahans Memorial Cemetery. Harkey Funeral Home has been entrusted with the arrangements.
