Kenneth (Ken) Ray Large passed away Wednesday, July 16, 2014, while surrounded by his family after a lengthy battle with cancer. Ken was born August 14, 1932, to Obie and Cora Large in Leakey, Texas. The younger brother of Helen, Ken graduated from Knott High School and went straight into the United States Air Force, where he served as a military policeman for 10 years. After being stationed for three years at Fairford Royal Air Force Base near Cheltenham, United Kingdom, he returned back to his roots in Texas, where he served at both Webb and Lackland Air Force bases. After leaving the Air Force, he tried his hand at various jobs and settled on being an engineering assistant at Cap Rock electric for 20 years. Ken was passionate about chili. A member of CASI (Chili Appreciation Society International), he was instrumental in developing what is now known as "The Ranch". In 1989, in the heat of Texas summer, he volunteered his time digging trenches and laying wire to what would become the main stage at The Ranch in Terlingua, Texas, with 3 of his close friends. Very well respected and a fierce competitor, Ken served at several different post within the organization, including director. Ken was preceded in death by his parents, Obie and Cora Large of Big Spring, Texas; his sister, Helen Large Thrailkill of Stanton, Texas; niece, Fran Scott of Midland, Texas; second wife, Dorothy Large of Midland, Texas; third wife, Barbara Large of Odessa, Texas; and daughter, Kimberly Large Carnes of Midland, Texas.
