Oliver Leon York, 87, of San Angelo, passed away at home on January 12, 2014. Graveside service will be at 3:00 p.m. Thursday, January 16, at Fairmount Cemetery with the Reverend Karen Schmeltekopf of Hospice of San Angelo officiating. Arrangements are by Robert Massie Funeral Home. Leon was born in Mineral Wells, Texas to Roland Lee "Buck" York and Bess Register York on August 1, 1926. He attended school in Mineral Wells, Midland, and Kemper Military School. He was a veteran of World War II and served in the Coast Guard aboard the USS General William Weigel. After the war, he attended American Fliers School in Arlington, Texas. He married Joyce Crawford on June 16, 1951 in Midland. He was a rancher in New Mexico and Hamilton County, a businessman, pilot, enjoyed golf, and was in his element designing, building and flying planes, model airplanes, and sailing boats. He was a member of St. Mark Presbyterian Church. At various times, he served on the Board of Directors of his bank, in the Chamber of Commerce, delivered Meals for the Elderly, was a deacon in his church, a conscientious pilot, loved flying aerobatics, and was proud to be a very early member of the Experimental Aircraft Association. He received a Master Pilot award from the FAA for 50 years of accident-free flying. Quiet, unassuming, humble, honest, gentle, kind, creative, supportive, intelligent, resourceful, generous, fun and funny, he is already greatly missed. Leon is preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Bob York; his sister, Barbara Baker; and by his infant daughter, Susan. Leon is survived by his wife, Joyce; his daughter, Nancy York of San Angelo; sister and brother-in-law, Madelyn and Barney Moore of Christoval; nieces and nephews, Sharon Gentry, Lee York, Jim Ward, Kitty Bailey, Lee Kennemer, Paul Kennemer, Rhonda Turk, Sherri Elkins, Mary Murphy, and their spouses; his great and great-great nieces and nephews; his longtime friend, Tim McTaggart; and by many other dear friends. Memorials may be given to Hospice of San Angelo or St. Mark Presbyterian Church. The York Family wishes to extend our sincere thanks to Dr. Flood and his staff, Hospice of San Angelo for their amazing responsiveness and tender care, and caregivers Jennifer Arreosola and Berta Stakes.
