Ophelia Carter, 88, of Midland, passed away Monday, June 9, 2014, in Abilene. She was born February 21, 1926, in Taylor County, Texas, to William Albert and Nancy Kate (Greene) Vessels. She came to Monahans in 1935, and remained for 78 years, until she moved to Midland with her daughter nine years ago. She was a professional seamstress for more than 56 years, 45 of those years she spent with A1 Cleaners. She enjoyed sewing and travel and was a member of Southside Baptist Church and Midland Quilt Guild. She is preceded in death by her husband, Sam L. Carter; son, Dewayne Carter; step-sons, Clark and Marvin Carter; brother, Jerry Vessels; sisters, Dorothy Redman, Talmadge Vessels, and Bessie Vessels; and granddaughter, Shayla Carter. Ophelia is survived by her son, Charles Carter and wife, Cindy of Monahans; daughter, Phyllis Bates and husband, Earl of Midland; brother, Waymond Vessels; four grandsons, Colby Carter of Amarillo, Evan Bates of Hewitt, Corey Carter of Lubbock, and Kevin Bates of Leonard; five step-grandchildren, Deborah Carter of Lott, Debra Hastings of Odessa, Jerry Carter of Odessa, Vernon Carter of Odessa, and Bruce Carter of Waco; three great-grandchildren; and five step-great-grandchildren. Visitation will be held Wednesday, June 11, 2014, from 1 p.m. - 8 p.m. at Harkey Funeral Home in Monahans. The family will be present for visitation from 5 p.m. - 7 p.m. Funeral services will be Thursday, June 12, 2014, at 10 a.m. at Southside Baptist Church. Pallbearers will be Bobby Redman, Billy Harris, Volley Vessels, James Linn, Cecil Dain, and Vernon Carter. Burial will follow at Monahans Memorial Cemetery. Arrangements have been entrusted to Harkey Funeral Home.
