Mike O. Smith Jr., of Midland, passed away Friday, August 10, 2012. He was born November 4, 1923 to Mike O. and Helen Ratto Smith in Blanket, Brown County, Texas. He graduated from Williams High School. He graduated from Texas Tech University where he received a B.S. Degree in Petroleum Engineering. Mike served in the United States Army, European Theatre, World War II. He was a member of the 740th Tank Battalion which was credited with stopping the advancement of the German SS 1st Panzer Division in the Battle of the Bulge. He was awarded the Bronze Star for Valor and was discharged with rank of First Sargent. Mike married Fae White on November 28, 1946 at the First Methodist Church in Odessa, Texas. He was a Registered Professional Engineer and a pioneer in the advancement of hydraulic fracturing. Mike was employed by Mobil Oil Company, Cardinal Chemical, Inc., Dresser Titan, and BJ Hughes before becoming an independent consultant during his forty plus year career in the Permian Basin. He was a member of St. Luke's United Methodist Church and served on the Church Council and Board of Trustees and was a member of the Keystone Sunday School Class. Mike was also a Master Mason. He was a member of the Society of Petroleum Engineers, Boys Scouts of America, Toast-masters International, and Optimist Club. Mike also was involved with the Permian Basin Petroleum Museum, Senior Citizens' Garage Sale in Midland, Shrimpfest Cooking Team for Ellen Noel Art Museum in Odessa, Texas and Director of the Permian Basin Oil Show. He was actively involved with Midland Petro-leum Club Wildcatters. His favorite hobby was trotline fishing. Mike is preceded in death by his parents, Mike O. and Helen Ratto Smith; brother, Albert (Shorty) Smith and one sister, Sue Robertson. He is survived by his wife, Fae Smith, of Midland; sons, Jon Michael Smith and wife Becki of Odessa, TX; Kirk Timothy Smith and wife Annette of Tomball, TX; six grandchildren, Mackenzie Smith of Odessa, TX; Michaele Smith of Austin, TX; Macey Smith of Tomball, TX; Kirsten Smith of Tomball, TX; Jacob Rolls of Brooklyn, NY; Andrew Rolls of Odessa, TX and two great-grandchildren. Visitation will be held Sunday, August 12, 2012 at Ellis Funeral Home between the hours of 4:00 and 6:00 p.m. Funeral Service will be held at 3:00 p.m. Monday, August 13, 2012 at St. Luke's United Methodist Church with Reverend Kathryn Boren officiating. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens in Odessa, TX. Arrangements are under the direction of Ellis Funeral Home. Con-dolences may be offered at www.ellisfunerals.com.
