Haley Brianne Kemp, 19, of Midland, Texas, passed away early on Saturday May 31, 2014. The circumstances of her death are still under investigation. Haley was born March 4, 1995, at Midland Memorial Hospital. She lived in Midland and attended Greenwood Schools from kindergarten through her graduation in 2013. Our Haley was a beautiful, brilliant, talented and kind-hearted young lady that was always aware and concerned for the outcast and the underdog. At GHS she was a member of Students in Philanthropy and started a program that brings speakers to the school each year from Midland Rape Crisis Center to discuss date rape issues with GHS students. In recognition of her work, the Children's Advocacy Center has decided to name their stuffed animal area in her honor. One of her favorite projects for the SIP was gathering teddy bears for the Center. Haley participated in golf, cross country, and tennis in high school. She was an accomplished musician who played oboe in the school band. Haley won several awards in solo and ensemble competitions, was a Texas Music Scholar and was chosen for the All Region Band two times. During marching season Haley changed to saxophone, where she enjoyed participating with the GHS Marching Band. Academically, Haley earned several awards including a Quill and Scroll recognition for her work on the school paper. She was honored as a Presidential Academic Scholar, and with membership in the National Honor Society. Haley was employed for over a year at Chili's Restaurant in Midland as a hostess. Throughout her work there and at her previous jobs in the retail and food service industry, Haley's greatest asset was her concern for the happiness of her customers and co-workers. Haley is survived by her parents, Lacey Hart Shelton and Trey Shelton of Odessa, and Timothy Kemp of Midland; her step-father, Jeremy Ashburn of Odessa and his wife Caroline; one brother, Andrew Ashburn of Odessa; her aunt, Meredith Hart of Crane; grandparents Bruce and Ginger Hart of Midland and Jimmy and Cheri Kemp of Laughlin Nevada; a great grandmother, Jean Roberts of Midland; great grandparents, Jess and Melba Hart of Dallas; and many cousins. Haley will also be truly missed by her dachshund puppy Lily; and by the many, many friends, co-workers and acquaintances that have had the good fortune to be touched by her sparkling smile and quirky sense-of-humor during her too short passage through this world. Visitation with Haley's family will be at Ellis Funeral Home in Midland from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday June 4, 2014. The funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday June 5, 2014, at Golf Course Road Church of Christ, 3500 W. Golf Course Rd. in Midland. Burial will follow at Resthaven Memorial Park in Midland. In lieu of flowers, Haley would have requested that memorial donations be sent to the Midland Rape Crisis Center. The family would like to thank our many friends for their support at this most difficult time. Funeral services under the direction of Ellis Funeral Home.
