William JOHNSTON Obituary

JOHNSTON, William Ronald July 2, 1929 - November 10, 2014 We are greatly saddened to announce that William (Bill) R. Johnston, of West Vancouver, passed away on November 10, 2014 at Lions Gate Hospital. Bill is survived by his wife of 63 years, Norma, his daughters, Judy (David) and Kathy (David), and also by his granddaughters, Jennifer, Sarah and Rebecca. He is predeceased by his son, Billy. Born in Vancouver, Bill attended King Edward High School. He received a degree in Commerce at UBC after which he joined the family business, Johnston Motors. Bill was a very talented man building their beautiful home in West Vancouver where they lived for 33 years and a family cabin at Whistler where they enjoyed many years of skiing. He loved building model ships and was also a talented carver of soapstone and wood. Bill and Norma loved to travel and had many memorable trips around the world, including many cruises. They also enjoyed watching sunsets from their condo in Maui and, in later years, trips in their motor home. Bill had a love of horse racing and owned a few horses. Bill experienced much of the world and made the world bigger and brighter for those of us who shared it with him. We were truly fortunate to have such a devoted husband, loving father and grandfather. Service to be held at Hollyburn Funeral Home 12:00pm Friday, November 21st, 2014 followed by light refreshments. In lieu of flowers please make a donation to the BC Cancer Agency. Hollyburn Funeral Home 604-922-1221 www.hollyburnfunerals.com

Dear Norma, Dave and I were so sad to hear that Bill has passed away. I am so glad we were able to spend time with you both last time we were in Canada. Dave and I will remember Bill as our friend who lived life to the fullest and we are glad we were part of his life. It would take too long for me to share all my memories of Bill, but I am so glad that I have them! Our thoughts are with you Norma and family.

Norma and family,
It was a sad day when Mom and I learned about the passing of Bill, our sincere condolences. Bill was a fine man; knowledgeable and talented in so many ways. I fondly remember our family gatherings together during summers in the Okanagan, my visits to Vancouver and Whistler, and our get-togethers in Penticton during the last few years. I admired Bill and valued his words during our conversations together. I'll miss his friendship.

Some awesome memories from my youth with Uncle Bill. Trips to the Cariboo, skiing at Rainbow, digging great snow caves on the deck at whistler, and many more. Uncle Bill gave me my first Swiss Army knife for my 10th birthday. we are thinking of all of you and our hearts go out to you.

I always look back at our trips to the Cariboo, Uncle Bill cooking up the grouse he shot, deer hunting and walking the trails. Uncle Bill gave me my first Swiss Army knife for my 10th birthday. As Sara mentioned the ski lessons at rainbow in whistler. Building snow caves on the deck at whistler. All great memories. Our thought are with you all.

It is with sympathy that I send this message to the family of Mr. William Johnston. Death is not an easy thing to go through but just know that God is waiting to heal your broken hearts.-Psalm 147:3.

My best memories of Uncle Bill are the days he took to teach me to ski by pulling me up the slope on the end of a ski pole! He also was generous in sharing his many craft skills such as leaded glass with us while we stayed at Whister.
My thoughts are with all.
