MOUNT AIRY — Mr. Donald Trenton Walker, 79, of 129 Cole St., Mount Airy, passed away early Saturday morning, March 1, 2014, at the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home in Dobson. Mr. Walker was born Nov. 12, 1934, in Surry County, the only child born to the late Harvey Roscoe and Bessie McHone Walker. Donald served our country in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict era. He retired as a business communications installer from Sprint Telephone Company, now CenturyLink, after many years of service. Mr. Walker was a longtime member and elder at Flat Rock Presbyterian Church. Donald graduated from the New York Institute of Photography in New York, N.Y., in the 1960s. For many years, he taught landscape painting and photography at Surry Community College. In addition, Mr. Walker served as a Boy Scout leader in the Greater Mount Airy area for more than 20 years. Most importantly, Donald was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend. He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Sharon Bell Walker of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Suzanne and Travis Key of Mount Airy; a son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Jean Walker of Mount Airy; five grandchildren, Cody Key, Chloe Key, Dakota Key, Heather Walker and Melissa Walker Swift and her husband, Joe, all of Mount Airy; and a great-grandson, Carter Swift of Mount Airy. In addition to his parents, Mr. Walker was preceded in death by a grandson, Sean Christopher Key. The funeral service will be held Tuesday, March 4, 2014, at 2 p.m. at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Mount Airy, with the Rev. Wilborn Rives officiating. Burial will follow at Skyline Memory Gardens, with military honors by the VFW Memorial Honor Guard. The family will receive friends Monday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
