EMERALD ISLE — Capt. Donald Francis Phillips, retired, 82, of Emerald Isle, passed away Thursday, Nov. 7, 2013, at Kindred Hospital in Greensboro. He was born in Suffolk County, Mass., on May 29, 1931, to the late Ralph and Alice Everbeck Phillips. He is survived by his wife, Sara Ashby Phillips of the home; a daughter, Sandra Phillips of Raleigh; a son and daughter-in-law, Jim and Kathy Phillips of Raleigh; one granddaughter, Katharine Albert and her husband Chris of Raleigh; one great-grandson, Christopher of Raleigh; a brother, Russell Phillips of Boston, Mass.; and brother-in-law, Ted Ashby and his wife, Faith, of Mount Airy. Mr. Phillips served 22 years in the United States Marine Corps and retired a captain. A veteran of the Korean Conflict and Vietnam War, he was active in the Chosin Few and served as a past treasurer. He was a decorated Marine and was awarded the Bronze Star, Purple Heart and the Navy Commendation among many others. Don was an avid reader, especially military history. He was a very colorful man who enjoyed cigars and scotch, and will be missed by many. A graveside memorial service will be held Monday, Nov. 11, 2013, at 2 p.m. at Oakdale Cemetery in Mount Airy with Father Ray Hanna officiating. Graveside rites will be conducted by the United States Marine Corps Honor Guard. The Phillips family will receive friends following the graveside at Ted and Faith Ashby's home, 217 Laurel Ridge Place, Mount Airy, NC 27030.
