PILOT MOUNTAIN — Mr. O. William (Bill) Hanner, 73, of Pilot Mountain, passed away on Thursday, Sept. 5, 2013, at the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home. He was born on Nov. 29, 1939, in Forsyth County, to the late Willie Frank Hanner and Delma Delores Taylor Hanner. Bill Hanner knew the value of hard work, holding down a full-time job at McLane Trucking Company while attending Wake Forest University in the late 1950s. Eventually earning his master's from Appalachian State University, Hanner began teaching at North Stokes High School in the late '60s where he met his future wife, Rebecca Haley. In 1969, they had a son, Zachary, and soon Hanner was commuting back and forth to his job as a teacher and head football coach at Patrick County High School in Stuart, Va. He moved to Mount Airy High School in the 1980s and taught history and coached JV football and varsity wrestling. After retiring, he joined the Pilot Mountain Masonic Lodge, where he served as Master of the Lodge and as coach for many a candidate. Bill Hanner was a loving and devoted husband, father, brother and teacher. He had a rare wit and was one heck of a storyteller. His legacy will live on in the lives of the many students, friends and family he touched in his time on this earth. He was preceded in death by his parents and his beloved wife, Rebecca Haley Hanner. Surviving to cherish his memory are his son, William Zachary (Zach) Hanner and wife, Dagmar Cooley; a grandson, Chester Beck Hanner; one sister, Delma Delores (D.D.) Hanner Grogan and husband, Richard; and two brothers, Kim Taylor Hanner and Zachary Frank Hanner and wife, Patsy. A memorial service will be held at the Pilot Mountain City Cemetery on Monday, Sept. 9, 2013, at 2 p.m. and will be open to the public. Afterwards, a gathering will be held at the picnic shelter at the top parking lot of Pilot Mountain State Park. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home, 945 Zephyr Road, Dobson, NC 27017. Cox-Needham Funeral Home of Pilot Mountain (www.coxneedham.com, www.facebook.com/coxneedham) is respectfully serving the Hanner family.
