MOUNT AIRY — Mr. Roy Edward Smith, 85, of 556 Pine Creek Trail, Mount Airy, passed away Sunday morning, Oct. 13, 2013, at Northern Hospital of Surry County. He was born Sept. 9, 1928, in Surry County to the late Edward Boston Smith and Bessie Snow Smith. He was a graduate of Franklin High School and the University of Nebraska. Mr. Smith served his country honorably as a chief master sergeant in the United States Air Force for 27 years where he received many service awards and decorations. Sgt. Smith and his wife traveled extensively while he was in service and after he retired. He returned to Surry County in 1975 where he successfully owned and operated ARSCO Storage until age and illness forced him to retire. Mr. Smith was a member of Holy Angels Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus and the Disabled American Veterans. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Loretta Vering Smith of the home; a daughter, Cynthia Smith Osborne and son-in-law, John Osborne of Twin Bridges, Mont.; a son, Stephen Edward Smith and friend, Cindy Tate, of Mount Airy; four grandchildren, Amber Williams and husband Jonathan Williams of Monroe, Theodore Smith of Greenville, Stephen Smith of Wilmington and Jason Smith of Los Angeles, Calif.; two sisters, Betty Lawrence of Greensboro and Lucy Hamilton of Hendersonville; and a sister-in-law, Barbara A. Smith of Mount Airy. In addition to his parents, Mr. Smith was preceded in death by a brother, George Smith. Services for Mr. Smith will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 16, 2013, at Holy Angels Catholic Church conducted by Father Larry Heiney. Interment will follow Oakdale Cemetery immediately following the service with US Air Force Honor Guard conducting a final salute to Mr. Smith. The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. Wednesday until time of the service at Holy Angels Catholic Church.
