MOUNT AIRY — Mrs. Sylvia Marion Johnson, 83, of Mount Airy, passed away on Monday, Oct. 14, 2013, at the Northern Hospital of Surry County in Mount Airy. She was born in Surry County on June 1, 1930, to the late Coley and Lettie Atkins Marion. Sylvia was a faithful member of Piney Grove Baptist Church as long as her health permitted, and was retired from Procter Silex in Mount Airy. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Fred William Johnson; five sisters, Bertha Chilton, Daisy Hembree, Gracie Atkins, Mamie Marion, and Stella Lewis; five brothers, Melvin Marion, Gratsie Marion, Ray Marion, Bill Marion, and Coy Marion. Surviving are two daughters, Edna Johnson Hawks of Lowgap, and Lorene Johnson Moore of Dobson; two sons and daughter-in-law, James William Johnson of Mount Airy, David Lee and Rhonda Johnson of Pilot Mountain; 12 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 17, 2013, at Piney Grove Baptist Church with burial to follow in the church cemetery. The Rev. Mark Reece, the Rev. Kermit Gray, and the Rev. Mitchell Robertson will conduct the services. The family will receive friends at Moody-Davis Funeral Home in Dobson on Wednesday evening from 7 until 9 p.m. and at other times the home of their mother on Turner Mountain Road.
