Gary Burns

Gary Lee Burns (known to friends as "Boomer") was born on December 15, 1946 in Evansville, IN and entered eternal life on Friday December 15, 2017. Raised in Mt. Vernon, IN, Gary was a known athlete playing baseball, football, and wrestling; graduating in 1964. He was a lifelong fan of the Chicago Cubs and Notre Dame football. Later, he would coach his own children in baseball and softball.

We were blessed to learn many valuable lessons from Gary during his 71 years, among them: Change your radiator when it's not 17 degrees below zero Fahrenheit. Never take a called third strike. Keep the dice rolling when playing Yahtzee. Sharing zucchini bread with neighbors, may lead to new friends. In other words: makes some plans, takes some changes, always keep playing and make as many friends along the way as possible.

He is survived by his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren whose photos he would share with prospective friends in the checkout line: Jodi (children Aubrie and Lynsie); Geoffrey (children Haley and Elizabeth); and Paul (wife Nancy, children Arielle (husband Nate Grossman, children Cooper, Isaac and Athena) and Natasha); sibling, Vicki; and many in-laws, nieces, nephews, friends and family too numerous to list but not forgotten.

Gary is preceded by his parents, Elmer and Ruth Burns. A special thanks to all the caregivers at Park Terrace Village for the exceptional care, comfort and compassion shown to dad during his stay.

Gary is reunited with his wife, Nancy L. Burns, his favorite dance and dinner partner. Friends (and strangers he would love to have met) can visit with Gary's family at Western Hills Country Club, 1711 Country Club Rd, Mt. Vernon, IN 47620 (light refreshments served) on Saturday, January 13, 2018 from 1:00 pm until 3:30 pm. In Gary's memory, donations may be made to USS LST Ship Memorial (Attn. Maintenance Fund) 840 LST Drive, Evansville, IN 47713.
