Overton, James D. "Jim" - Milton  
MILTON, Ky.-James D. "Jim" Overton, 85, of Milton, died on Thursday, March 12, 2015, at 11:58 p.m. at the Kentuckiana Medical Center in Clarksville, Ind. Funeral services were conducted Wednesday, March 18, at the Mt. Byrd Christian Church, in Milton, with Bro. Aaron Snelling officiating. Interment was in the Moffett Cemetery in Milton. Jefferson Post No. 9, of the American Legion, conducted a final salute on Wednesday at Mt. Byrd Christian Church with full military honors at Moffett Cemetery. Morgan & Nay Funeral Centre, 325 Demaree Drive in Madison, Ind. was entrusted with the arrangements. Mr. Overton entered this life on Sept. 11, 1929, in Trimble County, Ky. near Milton. He was the loving son of the late, Fred and Effie Jones Overton. He was raised in Trimble County residing there all of his life and graduated in 1947 from Milton High School. Jim was proud to be raised a sixth generation owner of the land that was given to his ancestors in a land grant from Virginia in 1784. He was inducted into the United States Army on June 30, 1955, in Louisville, Ky. He rose to the rate of Specialist Three and served in the Third Armor Division. He was honorably discharged during the Vietnam War on July 1, 1963, from Fort Dix, N. J. receiving the Good Conduct Medal. On Feb. 26, 1959, Jim was united in marriage to Ruth Evelyn Whisman in Trimble County. This happy union of fifty-six years was blessed with two sons, Mark and Keith and one daughter, Jodena. Jim worked as a truck driver for 21 years for the Barber Grocery Company in Madison. He enjoyed farming his 1600 acres all of his life, raising cattle, grain and tobacco. He was a member of the Cattleman Association of Kentucky, served on the ASCS Board for several years and commissioned as a Colonel on the staff of the Governor of Kentucky in the Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels in 2006. Jim was a faithful member of the Mt. Byrd Christian Church in Milton. He enjoyed boating, traveling, dancing, Florida fishing trips and 4-wheeling. Jim was a devoted husband, loving dad and grandpa. Survivors include his loving wife of fifty-six years, Ruth Evelyn Whisman Overton of Milton; his loving sons, Mark (Ann) Overton of Madison, Ind., and Keith Overton of Milton; his loving daughter, Jodena ( Sonny) Cook of Radcliff, Ky.; his grandchildren, Tim Overton Taylor, Jamie Overton (Beth), Troy "T.J." Overton, Mark Overton (Andrea), Tim Overton Taylor, John Darren Taylor (Natasha) and Sarah Beth Taylor; 10 great-grandchildren; his loving sister, Mary Jane Garrett of Madison; his sister-in-law, Bertie Campbell of Frankfort, Ky.; several nieces, nephews and other relatives. He was preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Effie Jones Overton; his brothers, Freddy and Gayle Overton; his brother-in-law, William "Bill" M. Garrett; and his great-granddaughter, Trinity Overton. Memorial contributions may be made to the Mt. Byrd Christian Church. Cards are available at the funeral home.
