FRANKFORT, Ky. – George F. Brooks Sr., 87, died Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2013.
Funeral services were Tuesday, Jan. 8, at Clark Legacy Center, Versailles Road, Frankfort, with Pastor James Byrd officiating. Burial was at Sunset Memorial Gardens, with VFW
Post 4075 presenting military honors at graveside.
Mr. Brooks was born Sept. 6, 1925, in Carrollton, Ky., to the late Albert and Ida McManis Brooks. He served in the U.S. Navy
from 1941-45 and then the U.S. Marine Corps
for the duration of WWII
. He served in both the Atlantic and Pacific Theaters.
He was employed as the lock keeper of Lock No. 2 on the Kentucky River in Lockport, Ky., and later retired from federal employment at the Bluegrass Army Depot.
He was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church and a life member of VFW Post 4075 in Frankfort.
Survivors include his sister, Virginia "Betty" Partin; two sons, Richard (Mary) Brooks and George (Teresa) Brooks Jr., both of Frankfort; and two daughters, Sharlene (Bernie) Salmons of Mount Sterling, Ky., and Sherry (Alan) Ferguson of Georgetown, Ky.; six grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
Casket-bearers were Jason Brooks, Josh Smith, Alan Ferguson, Chris Barnes, Isaac Barnes and Doug Smith; Stanley Smith was the honorary casket-bearer.
