CARROLLTON, Ky.- Former Carrollton Fire Chief Randall L. ""Randy"" Tharp, 56, passed away peacefully Monday morning, Dec. 30, 2013, at his residence in Carrollton.
Funeral services were held Thursday, Jan. 2, 2014, at the Tandy-Eckler-Riley Funeral Home, 809 Highland Ave. in Carrollton with the Rev. Miles Miller officiating. Burial was in the I.O.O.F. Cemetery in Carrollton.
He was born on July 31, 1957 in La Grange, Oldham County, Ky., the son of the late Donald William Tharp and Marcia H. (Hawkins) Tharp. He was a 1975 graduate of Carroll County High School. He served in fire service from 1978-2011. He retired in 2011 from the City of Carrollton, where he served as the Fire Chief and 911 Supervisor for Carroll County. He served on the Westside Volunteer Fire Department in Prestonville, retiring from that department when he took over as Fire Chief for the City of Carrollton. He served on the Carroll County 911 Board from 1994-2011. He previously worked for Coca-Cola and A & W Distribution Company in Carrollton. He served in the Army National Guard.
In his spare time, he enjoyed farming, fishing and hunting. He was a very talented woodworking craftsman.
He is survived by his wife, Grace A. (Corley) Tharp, to whom he married on Oct. 8, 1977; his daughter, Melissa A. Hann and her husband, Jeremy; his son, Eric R. Tharp; his father and mother in-law, David and Mary Jo Corley; his two grandchildren, Haley and Ryan Tharp, all of Carrollton. His two cherished dogs, Killer and Judy, survive him.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Brenda L. Moore; and his brother, Phillip W. Tharp.
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be given to the WHAS Crusade for Children in care of the funeral home.
