MADISON, Ind.-Roy M. Darnold, 88, of Madison, died, Friday, Jan. 11, 2013, at his home near Madison.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Jan. 15, at Morgan & Nay Funeral Centre, 325 Demaree Drive in Madison with Pastor Tom Rogers and Pastor Ron Lee officiating. Interment was in the Caledonia Cemetery in Moorefield, Ind. Final Salute was conducted at the Morgan & Nay Funeral Centre and full military honors at the graveside by Jefferson Post 9 of the American Legion.
Mr. Darnold was born Dec. 26, 1924, in Campbellsburg, Ky., to the late Carlisle and Lena Mitchell Darnold. Mr. Darnold was raised in Campbellsburg and was a 1942 graduate of English High School.
He was inducted on Aug. 8, 1944, into the United States Army during World War II. He rose to the rank of technician fifth grade serving Company E 273D Infantry 69th Division. He fought in the battles and campaigns of the Ardennes, Rhineland, and Central Europe. He was honorably discharged on May 4, 1946, from Camp Atterbury receiving the EAME Theater Ribbon with Three Bronze Stars, Good Conduct Medal, Purple Heart, World War II Victory Medal, and the Army of Occupation Medal Germany.
Mr. Darnold was united in marriage on March 19, 1947, in Cooper's Bottom to Wilma Janet McManis. This happy union was blessed with one son, Roy Glenn and two daughters, Bonnie and Vicki. Mr. Darnold was a farmer at heart and had farmed his entire life. He enjoyed raising tobacco, hay and cattle. He had begun farming the family farm at the age of 15.
He was a faithful member of Brushy Fork Baptist Church since 1948 and had served as trustee, Sunday school teacher and a Deacon since 1956. Mr. and Mrs. Darnold had enjoyed living the past 65 years on Tate Ridge where they enjoyed their neighbors and friends. He enjoyed socializing, chewing tobacco, horse pulls and old westerns.
Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Wilma Janet McManis Darnold; his daughters, Bonnie Konkle and her husband, Larry, Vicki Fox and her husband, Stephen; his daughter-in-law, Janet F. Darnold, all of Madison; grandchildren, Mark Darnold and his wife, Jenny, Christopher Darnold and his wife, Tara, Emily Fox and Ryan Fox; step-grandson, Brad Fox and his wife, Michelle; great grandchildren, Carlie, Austin, Kobe and Kamron; step-great-grandchildren, Taylor and Peyton; sisters in law, June Darnold of Madison, and Frances Watkins of Carrollton, Ky.; brother in law, Kenneth McManis and his wife, Charlotte of Roanoke, Va.; several nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
His parents, Carlisle and Lena Mitchell Darnold; son, Roy Glenn Darnold, (died, March 10, 2008); brother, James Carlisle Darnold, (died, December 2, 1991); sisters, Virginia Buhlig and Alene Kindoll preceded him in death.
The family requests memorials in memory of Mr. Darnold to the Brushy Fork Baptist Church or or Hospice of Jennings County, contribution cards are available at the funeral home.
