Purcell, Virginia Ann - 79, Onancock, Va, Formerly Of Manasquan
Virginia Ann Purcell AGE: 79 • Onancock, VA, formerly of Manasquan Virginia Ann Purcell of Onancock, VA (formerly of Manasquan, NJ) died peacefully at home on December 19, 2014. Born on July 15, 1935 in Brooklyn, NY to her loving parents, Ralph and Ann Fletcher, she moved with her family to the Jersey Shore where they settled in Spring Lake Heights. "Ginny" attended St. Rose High School where she met her future husband Richard "Richie" Purcell, and developed friendships that lasted a lifetime. She was a proud graduate of St. Vincent's School of Nursing in New York City. The St. Vincent's Registered Nurse's cap and pin remained cherished parts of Ginny throughout her life. Ginny and Richie married and moved to Manasquan, NJ where they had two sons, Richard, Jr. and Michael. Through her love, devotion, and courage, she raised her sons, instilling them with character, morals, and her work ethic, which was never-ending. They hope to have made her proud. Through the Seventies and Eighties, Ginny was the Head Nurse at Monmouth County Tuberculosis Clinic, providing care for underserved residents in the area. There, she met Dot, who became her friend, lifelong companion, member of the family, and eventually her caregiver. We all owe a tremendous debt of gratitude to Dot for loving and taking care of our Mother, Grandmother, Sister, and dear friend. She made Ginny happy, and we love her. Ginny and Dot left the TB Clinic and ventured to the Eastern Shore of Virginia, where they took over E.L. Willis General Store, and turned it into one of the hottest restaurants the DelMarVa peninsula ever saw. After eight years of the demanding work that a successful restaurant requires, Ginny and Dot called it quits, retired to Onancock, VA, and hit the road. Ginny loved to travel and camp, venturing across the country and beyond to explore the world. She started her camping adventures as a single Mom with her two young sons and a tent. In retirement, she and Dot drove throughout North America on many adventures, seeing the natural beauty of the land, meeting people from everywhere, and finding casinos whenever they could. There are too many stories to tell in this too-short remembrance. Virginia Purcell was a special lady. She overcame hardship in her life through toughness, determination, and devotion to others. Her strength and love will be with us always. Ginny is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, Richard and Maryellen, Fair Haven, NJ and Michael and Lois, New Berlin, Pa and her lifelong friend, Dot, and six grandchildren, whom she loved dearly: Samantha, Helene, Caitlin, Erin, Richie, and Jimmy Purcell. A memorial gathering will be held at Neary Quinn Funeral Home, 39 South Street, Manasquan, NJ 08736 on Friday, December 26 from 6-8 PM. A mass will be held on Saturday at !0:30 AM at St. Catherine's Roman Catholic Church, Spring Lake, NJ, followed by a burial service at St. Catherine's Cemetery.
