Joan Cook Luckhardt, PHD AGE: 72 • Dayton Joan Luckhardt was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in 1942, died peacefully at home on Sunday, January 25, 2015, of a very rare viral caused skin cancer known as Merkle Cell Carcinoma. Joan had many careers and interests; earning degrees in education from the University of Pittsburgh and Rutgers University, which led to a teaching career in subjects including art, , art history, crafts, community projects, sociology and anthropology. The later subjects followed earning her masters and doctorate in anthropology at Rutgers University. She taught at Rutgers, William Patterson University, and then joined the faculty of Strathmore campus of the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. Joan worked on community medicine awareness on lead poisoning prevention, and other environmental challenges, such as healthy homes. She also served on the Board of the Alliance to End Childhood Lead Poisoning and the Global Alliance to End Lead Poisoning, leading to presentations in Egypt and Cuba, and Mexico, among other countries. After retirement, Joan was active in her village of Dayton, New Jersey, a part of South Brunswick Township, heading up a community group, Dayton village Citizens Coalition, with efforts in historic preservation, environmental efforts, gardening education, and sponsoring holiday events. She was also active in her dog tracking club, Lenape Tracking Club. When she taught she was active in the New Jersey Education Association, holding leadership positions in her local. At college she served on the local AAUP board. Joan loved gardening and her greenhouse, as well as silversmithing, oil painting, and sculpture. For a number of years she trained and showed her dogs, Belle, Phlaire, and Dennis in obedience and tracking. Joan is survived by her husband of nearly 40 years, Robert K. Tucker, her step children, Katy Tucker and Lee Tucker Therriault, and her heart children, Dr. Goga Dukovic and Dr. Danijel Djukovic, who came to the family during the Bosnian war as well as grandchildren Zoe and Eli Tucker-Borrut. She is also survived by her brothers John Louis Luckhardt of Pittsburgh, Louis Conrad Luckhardt of Ennis, Texas, and William Wade Luckhardt of Danville, California, their wives and her nieces and nephews Allyson Eckenrode, Jessica Whyte, Tommy, Doug and Mathew, Bradley, Alexander Luckhardt; and great nieces Reese, Mattie, and Piper. A Memorial Service will be held on Sunday, March 1, 2015, 2:30 pm, at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Princeton, 50 Cherry Hill Rd, Princeton, NJ. In lieu of flowers please make donations to either the Golden Retriever Foundation, POB 3462, Omaha, NE 68102, which supports research into canine and human cancer, or to Institutional Advancement, Fox Chase Cancer Center, 333 Cottman Avenue, Philadelphia, PA 19111.
