Deacon Charles W. Harris, 89, died Mon., Dec. 10, 2012 in Haven Hospice at JFK Medical Center, Edison. Born in Rutherford, he was a lifelong Plainfield resident. He was formerly employed with the Plainfield Board of Education as a security guard. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Plainfield where he served as a Deacon, sang in the male chorus and mass choir. He served in the U. S. Marines during World War II and was one of the first black men permitted to join the Marines.

He was predeceased by his parents Rev. Dr. Charles P. Harris and Mattie Louise Harris Bagley, a daughter Sandra Harris, 2 sons Ronald W. Harris and Paul W. Perry, a grandson Rahsaan W. Harris. Surviving are his wife Doris C. Harris; 2 daughters Adrienne Dortch and Doris S. Perry; several grandchildren and great grandchildren; a daughter in law Gail Harris and the Calvary Church family.
