Eugene L. Mixtacki
Having served the Lord faithfully as a Capuchin-Franciscan Priest, Fr. Gene Mixtacki went to rest with the Lord on March 11, 2014. Born in South River to Edward L. and Jane (Nakielny), he was brother to Eileen and Gus Catsoulis and Susanne Husleberg, uncle to Jaclyn and Darrem Cornwell and Cheryl and Paul Marsilio, great-uncle to Aimie and John Hulseberg and companion to his beloved pet - Maxine.
Raised in South River he attended local Catholic and public schools. He completed his college and gradute studies at The Orchard Lake Schools ("The Polish Seminary") in Michigan. In 1976 he was accepted into the Capuchin-Franciscan Order, the Polish Province of Ss Stanislaus and Adelbert. The Order sent Gene for studies in Poland where he attended courses at the Catholic University of Lublin. On July 31, 1979 Gene professed his solemn vows as a Capuchin-Franciscan and was called to the priesthood on September 17, 1979.
In the years that followed to the present, Fr Gene ministered faithfully at St. Ann's in Broken Arrow, OK; St. Mary's, South River, NJ (Polish); Cathedral Parish in Lafayette, LA; St. Ann's in Mamou, LA; AIDS Ministry at Cook County Hospital in Chicago, IL; St. Joseph's (African American Parish) Kansas City, MO; St. George's in Cincinatti, OH (Campus Ministry and AIDS Ministry); St. Theresa the Little Flower, Linden, NJ (Polish)
After a heart transplant in 1998 Fr. Gene served as resident chaplain to the Little Servant Sisters (LSIC) in Cherry Hill, NJ and then as administrator of St. Joseph Parish, New Brunswick, NJ (Polish). Since 2010 Fr. Gene has assisted in area (Polish and American) parishes as he was needed. " May he now enjoy a well earned eternal rest."
Funeral services will be held 9:00am Monday at St Mary's Ostrabrama Church, 30 Jackson St. South River. Burial will follow at St Mary's Cemetery, South River. Calling hours at the funeral home will be Saturday from 5-8pm at Maliszewski Funeral Home, 218 Whitehead Ave., South River.
