Howard Allan Metzler, 77, passed away on Thursday, October 17, 2013, at Foothill Acres Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Hillsborough, NJ, surrounded by his family. He was born in Far Hills, NJ on December 31, 1935 to Thelma and Asa Metzler. He was a graduate of Bernards High School and served four years in the U.S. Navy (1954-1958) in various locations, including Cuba, St. Thomas and Newfoundland. Following an honorable discharge, Howard returned to NJ where he met his wife of 52 years, Patricia (Major). They were married on November 25, 1961 and resided in Bridgewater for 10 years before moving to their present home in Branchburg. Howard was a sheet metal mechanic for a division of Economics Laboratory. He later was employed at Cross Publishing Company. Howard held a part time position at Wegmans in Bridgewater for the past nine years prior to his illness. Howard was a communicant of St. Bernard of Clairvaux in Bridgewater where he served as a Eucharistic Minister for fourteen years. Howard enjoyed bowling, fishing, hunting, camping, woodworking and going out with the family, but he received the most joy from the time he spent with his two grandchildren. He was never shy in expressing his pride in them and in their accomplishments.

Howard was a devoted and loving husband, father and grandfather. He will be greatly missed by all those who knew and loved him.

He was preceded in death by his beloved parents, Asa and Thelma Smith Metzler and his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Walter and Ellen Fiorentino Major.

He is survived by his wife and best friend, Patricia; his son, Allan of Easton, PA; his daughter, Sharon Richa of Milltown; his granddaughter, Gabrielle Richa of Elizabeth; his grandson, Pfc Mansour Richa, US Marines, presently stationed in VA; his brother, Charles Metzler of Whitehouse Station; his sister, Lola Conner and husband, James of Alpha; his sister-in-law, Barbara Conner and husband, Harold of Pattenburg; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will begin with a prayer at 9:15 AM on Tuesday, October 22, 2013 at Branchburg Funeral Home, 910 US Highway 202 South, Branchburg, NJ 08876 (908) 526-7638 followed by a 10 AM Funeral Liturgy at St. Bernard R.C. Church, 500 Route 22 East, Bridgewater. Entombment will be at St. Bernard Mausoleum, Route 28, Bridgewater. Viewing hours are Monday, October 21, 2013 from 6 to 9 PM at the funeral home.
