Janis Jo Wilkerson
Janis Jo (Gresham) Wilkerson was born November 1st 1934, in Port Arthur, Texas, the eighth of nine children of Kearby & Margie Gresham. Janis graduated from Comanche High School in 1953 as Salutatorian. She graduated from Port Arthur College's Junior Bookkeeping and Clerical Department in 1954. Janis was married to Gene Warren Wilkerson in 1957 in Houston, Texas.
After Gene graduated from the University of Texas
they moved to New Jersey and both were employed by the Dupont Company in Parlin, NJ. They had three sons and lived in the towns of Old Bridge and East Brunswick, NJ. Janis earned a certificate to teach English and a Bachelor of Arts degree from Rutgers University in 1972. She was later employed in various administrative positions at Dow Jones & Company in South Brunswick, NJ, where she worked for over 20 years.
Janis was an active supporter of East Brunswick Baptist Church and the Dow Jones Employees Federal Credit Union, where she was on the Board of Directors from 1986 to 2009 and served as Chairwoman and Secretary. After retiring in 1997 she moved back to Port Arthur, Texas to be near her family. She loved reading, especially mysteries and historical works, and was intrigued by the writings of Immanuel Velikovsky. Janis had a great appreciation for art and architecture which led her to travel with her sons and daughters-in-law to Rome in 2009 for her 75th birthday. Her own artwork can be seen in her skilled needlework and quilting.
Janis was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, sisters Geraldine Cantu, Wilda Quine, and Betty Sherwin and brothers Alton and Bill. Surviving are her sisters Eugenia Neeb and Frances Choate and her brother Dennis. Also surviving are her three sons and daughters-in-law, Karl Wilkerson and Bridgette Beach of Reston, VA; Brian and Debbie Wilkerson of Alexandria, VA, and Kirby Wilkerson and Courtney Clark-Wilkerson of Mannford, OK as well as many nieces and nephews.
Janis had lymphoma and experienced a rapid decline in health since November. She passed away on June 22nd, 2013 at Inova Fairfax Hospital in Virginia. A memorial will be held at the Cambridge Inn, Spotswood, New Jersey at 10:30 AM on Saturday, July 13th. She was interred in Bremond, Texas near her parents and other family members. A memorial service will begin at 2:00 PM on Saturday, July 27th at Bremond Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, www.lls.org
