John E. "Shots" Szatkowski

AGE: 57 • South Amboy

John E. "Shots" Szatkowski, 57, of South Amboy died Wednesday December 4, 2013 at home. Born in South Amboy, he lived there all of his life. He was employed by the Hess Oil Company, Woodbridge for the past 35 years.

John has been a fireman with Protection Engine Company #6 sine the early 1970's and has served the city of South Amboy Fire Department in many capacities. He rose through the ranks of the South Amboy Fire Department until he became Chief in 1991. John was a member of the Fireman's Relief Association, the Middlesex County Chief's Association and the New Jersey State Chief's Association. He was serving as the current Vice President of Protection Engine Company #6 and had served as a past vice president for numerous years.

He also filled the position of Treasurer for Protection and was an active member who responded to many alarms. He was most recognizable as the South Amboy Fire Department Company Leader for the line of march when the fire department would attend and participate in parades. John also served the City of South Amboy as a Councilman from 2001-2008 and was a member of the F.L.A.

Son of the late Edward Szatkowski, he was also predeceased by his brother, Donny Szatkowski and his nephew, Eddie Szatkowski. He is survived by his wife, Mary Kudelka Szatkowski; his son Kyle Szatkowski of Red Bank; his daughter and son-in-law, Melissa and Jim Matier of West Long Branch; his mother, Florence Szatkowski of South Amboy; his brothers and sisters-in-law, Edward and Eileen Szatkowski of South Amboy, Kenneth and Jamie Szatkowski of High Bridge, Thomas and Linda Szatkowski and Steven and Susan Szatkowski; his sister and brother-in-law, Joann and Charlie English and his sister-in-law, Mary Fern Szatkowski all of South Amboy; his grandchildren, Grace, Maddie and Jack; many nieces and nephews and his faithful companion, Kelly.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday December 7, 2013 at 9:30 am from the Gundrum Service "Home For Funerals" 237 Bordentown Avenue, South Amboy followed by a 10:30 am Mass of Christian Burial at St. Mary's Church, South Amboy. Interment will follow at Sacred Heart Cemetery, Parlin. Visitation will be on Friday from 2-4 and 7-9 pm. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the South Amboy First Aid Squad, South Amboy Fire Department or the .
