John Varley

John F. Varley of Bound Brook passed away on Monday, February 11, 2013 at the Francis E. Parker Memorial Home in Piscataway. He was 88. Born in Olean, New York in 1924, Mr. Varley grew up in New Brunswick, New Jersey, son of the late Dr. James R. and Marie D. Varley. A graduate of St. Peter's High School, he served in the Army Air Corps during World War II, and then graduated from St. Peter's College in Jersey City. He started his close to 40 year career with Johnson & Johnson in 1952. He was named National Director of Sales and Distribution Services in 1961, and in 1972 was appointed as Vice President and Member of the Board of Directors of Personal Products Company, a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson. In 1982 he was named Vice President of the Corporate Staff, and subsequently became Group Vice President of Johnson & Johnson Hospital Services, a position held until his retirement in 1991. In addition to his work at Johnson & Johnson, Mr. Varley was an active member of many other organizations. In the 1950's he was a member of the adjunct staff at Rutgers University School of Management. He was founder of the national organization of The Council of Logistics Management. He was past president of the United Way of Central Jersey, and was a member of the Board of Trustees of The New Brunswick Cultural Center. He also served as a member of the Board of Trustees of The College of St. Elizabeth. An active parishioner of St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church since moving to Bound Brook almost 50 years ago, he was a member of the committee which planned and oversaw the building of the present day church. He had also served the church as a lector.

Mr. Varley is survived by his wife of over 59 years, Ruth Burns Varley, and his three children, Maureen and her husband Boris Moczula of Edison, John and his wife Marianne of San Mateo, California, and Thomas and his wife Heidi of North Hampton, New Hampshire. He also leaves behind his grandchildren: Maureen and Boris' children Andrew, Mary and Timothy Moczula; John and Marianne's children Matthew and Leigh Varley; and Thomas and Heidi's children Camden, Erica, Tess and Mitchel Varley.

Visitation will be Thursday from 3:00 PM until 7:00 PM at the Costello-Runyon Funeral Home, 568 Middlesex Avenue (RT 27), Metuchen, N.J. A Mass of Resurrection will be held on Friday, February 15, 2013 at 10:00 AM at St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church in Bound Brook. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to St. Peter's University in Jersey City, New Jersey, or to The College of St. Elizabeth in Convent Station, New Jersey.
