Joseph J. DeCarlo, Sr.

AGE: 89 • South Plainfield

Joseph J. DeCarlo, Sr., 89, passed away peacefully on Thursday, October 25, 2012 at his home. Born in Brooklyn, New York, Joe has resided in South Plainfield for most of his life. Joe served in the United States Army during WWII, in the Cannon Company, 378th infantry prior to his discharge in 1945. He began a long and rewarding career in Law Enforcement in 1958. Joe entered the Kodak Training Center and went on to continue his training at the Federal Bureau of Identification at the FBI Academy in Quantico, Virginia. He attended enforcement photography school in 1964 and fingerprinting in 1974. In addition, he had juvenile delinquency training at Rutgers University in 1961. His career spanned 30 years with the South Plainfield Police Department where he retired as a Detective Sergeant in 1984. He was responsible for organizing and starting their ID unit. Joe was also instrumental in the development of the South Plainfield P.A.L. building and program, serving as their Secretary - Treasurer and is a charter member. Additionally, he is a life and charter member of the South Plainfield VFW # 6763, The South Plainfield Senior Center, the NJ State Identification Association and along with his family, has been a long time parishioner of Sacred Heart RC Church.

His wife, Mary A.T. DeCarlo died in 1996. Surviving are his three children and their spouses; Linda & Bob Cook, Donna & Bob Cirillo and Joseph, Jr. and Diana DeCarlo. A sister; Ann Ludington, five grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Also surviving are many, nieces, nephews and extended family members.

Funeral services will begin on Saturday, October, 27, 2012 at 9:30 am in the McCriskin - Gustafson Home For Funerals, 2425 Plainfield Ave. South Plainfield, NJ 07080 www.mccriskinfuneralhome.com followed by a 10:30 AM funeral mass in Sacred Heart Church, 149 South Plainfield Ave., South Plainfield, NJ. Entombment will follow in Holy Redeemer Cemetery Mausoleum. Family and friends may attend the visitation hours on Friday, October. 26, 2012 from 2-4 &7-9 PM. Donations in his memory may be made to the South Plainfield P.A.L., 1250 Maple Ave., South Plainfield, NJ 07080.
