Leonard J. Caro

Leonard J. Caro, 89, of South Plainfield, NJ passed away peacefully at home on August 16, 2013. The son of Manfredo and Rosaria (Gino) Caro was born in New York City and grew up in Brooklyn, NY. While serving in the military during World War II
, he met his wife, Catherine Hughes Caro, a U.S.O. hostess. Together they spent over 63 years of wedded bliss in Dunellen, NJ raising four children and nurturing 13 grandchildren.
Leonard's family was the center and focus of his life. He was also a successful businessman and active community member. He was the co-founder and President of Custom Molders Corporation from 1959 until his retirement in 1987. An accomplished engineer, Leonard was a Senior Emeritus member of the Society of Plastics Engineers.
He was a graduate of Straubenmuller Textile High School in Brooklyn, NY and complemented his leading edge plastics work experience with graduate engineering work. He was an active member of the Knights of Columbus in Dunellen and communicant of St. John the Evangelist Church. Leonard was a generous supporter of Mount Saint Mary Academy in Watchung, NJ and The Boys Town of Italy among other charitable organizations.
In his recent years, he became the co-captain of the South Plainfield Senior Citizens competitive billiards team, "South Plainfield Side Pockets." He brought the enthusiasm, drive and dedication, hallmarks of his business career to this pastime. His quiet strength, generosity and sharp wit will be missed by all who knew him.
He was a devoted son, husband, father, brother, grandfather and great-grandfather. Leonard was predeceased by his wife, Catherine, his parents, sisters and son-in-law James Philbin. He is survived by his four children; Mary Ellen and William Burdett, Rosanne Philbin, Joseph and Dina Caro and Cathy and Joseph Scarpitto, as well as thirteen grandchildren (James Philbin, Thomas Philbin, Catherine Burdett Gill, David Burdett, Mary Ann Burdett, Len Caro, Michael Caro, Maria Caro, Catherine Caro, Joseph Scarpitto, Jessica Scarpitto, Gerianne Scarpitto, and Leonard Scarpitto); and three great-grandchildren (Chloe Philbin, Jack Philbin and Cyril J. Gill).
Viewing for family and friends will be held at Sheenan's Funeral Home in Dunellen on Sunday, August 18, 2013 from 2-6 pm. A Liturgy of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, August 19, 2013 at 9:00 am at St. John the Evangelist Church in Dunellen.
