Louis Leo Kaplan, 97, of West Orange, NJ., formerly of Monmouth County, died on Saturday, November 2, 2013. Born in Brooklyn NY., Mr. Kaplan moved to Belmar, N.J. in 1944. He later lived in Ocean Township, Asbury Park, and Tinton Falls NJ before moving to Daughters of Israel in West Orange in 2009.

Mr. Kaplan graduated from Brooklyn College in 1937 with an undergraduate degree in Physics. After working as a Supervisor at Continental Silver Co., he became a civilian Physicist for the Army Signal Corps at Fort Monmouth, NJ in 1942. In a distinguished 33 year career there he rose to Deputy Director of Engineering Support Services overseeing a staff of over 800. In 1977 he was granted a NJ Professional Engineer license. Mr. Kaplan was an active member of Temple Beth El in Oakhurst, and a proud member of Sigma Xi science honor fraternity -- both for more than 50 years.

Mr. Kaplan was predeceased in 2010 by his wife of 66 years, Ruth (Feldman). He is survived by daughters Barbara (Ed) Newman and Robin Varker, and grandsons Michael (Amy) and Andrew (Amy) Varker. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Daughters of Israel, St. Barnabas Hospice, Sigma Xi or Brooklyn College.
