Mary Blazakis fell asleep to be in the Lord on Sunday afternoon, the eve of the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary, who's name she was given at birth. She was 93 years old.
Mrs. Blazakis was born in New Brunswick to Catherine and Emmanuel Bruzakis and was blessed with a long and fulfilling life. She was a lifelong member of St. George Greek Orthodox Church. Mrs. Blazakis was a member of the church Philoptochos Society for over 50 years and a lifetime member of the Daughters of Penelope Chapter Tethys No. 229. She was Chairperson of the Baking Committee for St. George's annual Greek Festival for over 25years. Mrs. Blazakis was a chairperson of the St. George Needy Cases Fund for over 20 years. She and her husband owned and operated the Rivoli Sweet Shop.
She was predeceased by her Husband, Mr. James Blazakis in 1998. She was also pre deceased by her brother, John Blazakis who was shot down while serving in the United States Air Force during World War II
. Mrs. Blazakis is survived by her daughter, Evangeline Blazakis of Hightstown and her son John Blazakis of Somerset. She is also survived by her sister Virginia Andrews of Somerset and her granddaughter; Elektra Sipars of Harrison, NJ. Of the many cousins who survive Mary, she was closest to John, Catherine, Sophia, and Steven Chick and Mary Kuklakis. She is also survived by her sisters in law Mary O'Donnell and Sophie Blazakis and a lifelong friend, Alice Kartikis. She was a woman with a strong spirit and will be deeply missed.
Funeral services will begin on Thursday at 10AM at the Gleason Funeral Home 1360 Hamilton Street Somerset followed by a 10:30AM funeral service at St. George Greek Orthodox Church in Piscataway. Interment will follow at Van Liew Cemetery in North Brunswick. Friends and family may call from 5-8PM on Wednesday at the funeral home.
