Mr. Philip H. Gessner passed away Wednesday October 9th, 2013, at his home in Somerset. He was 89 years old. Born in Manhattan, NY, to Frederick and Josephine Gessner, Philip served with the U.S. Navy in the South Pacific as a Seabee during World War II.

He had worked for Triangle Cable and as a machinist at Waldren Harding Machine before beginning his 20 year career with the U.S. Postal Service. Mr. Gessner earned a degree in Industrial Management from Rutgers University in 1964. He was a member of the Manville VFW and the Somerset Knights of Columbus. Mr. Gessner enjoyed traveling, especially to Hawaii, and spending time with his family and celebrating their traditions, such as a cold draft beer with his sons.

Mr. Philip Gessner was predeceased by his son, Bruce Gessner; his grandson, Nicholas Gessner; and his sister, Mildred Ford.

He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Rose (Vajai) Gessner; their children, Philip Gessner and his wife Mary of Milltown, Thomas Gessner of Monroe, NC, Gary and Beverly Gessner of Yardville, Eugene and Maryann Gessner of Hillsborough, and Rosemarie Gessner of East Brunswick; by his grandchildren, Eric, Dawn, Brian, Paul, Adam, Chris, Brandon, and Julia; and by his 7 great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be on Monday from 2-4 pm & 7-9 pm at the Gleason Funeral Home 1360 Hamilton St. Somerset, NJ 08873. The funeral mass will begin at 9 am Tuesday in St. Matthias R.C.
