Vincent Castro, 65, of Kill Devil Hills, NC, entered into eternal rest on Sunday, Dec. 30, 2012. Born and raised in Orange, NJ, he spent his summers in Normandy Beach, where he was a lifeguard and swimming instructor while attending school. Mr. Castro graduated from Oratory Prep, attended Temple University and received a B.A. and M.A. degree from St. Bernard's College in Alabama. Employed by the Jackson Township Board of Education in 1969, Mr. Castro was a teacher of history, civics, and economics at Memorial High School and the Geotz Middle School. He was also an I.S.S. teach at Memorial. Mr. Castro was the head football coach for the freshman team for many years, having the first winning season in 1972-1973. He was also the assistant coach for the boys soccer team at Geotz. Having summer vacation from school, Vinny enjoyed tending bar at such establishments as the Surf Club, Rip Tide, Jack and Bill's, Num Num's, and the Grad School Pub. In 2003 after 34 years of teaching and coaching, he retired to the Outer Banks of North Carolina.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Genevieve; his sister, Debra Pollock; his mother-in-law, Gladys Lange; and his brother-in-law, Jeff Lange. Surviving are his wife Linda of 39 years; his daughter, Paige Schwartz and son-in-law, Mike; a son, Michael; his two grandsons, Aaron and Matthew Schwartz; his brother-in-law, Bob Pollock; his nephew, Robert Pollack; and his niece, Kimberly Pollock.
Visitation for Vinny will be held from 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 5, 2013 at Silverton Memorial Funeral Home, 2482 Church Road, Toms River. Cremation will be private.
