Robert Austin Morris, 84, Lakehurst, died at home on August 17, 2012. Robert was born in a home in Lakehurst on Brown Avenue. His family pre-dates the Civil War in the Lakehurst/ Manchester area. He served in the United States Army, and, like many other young men, was training for the invasion of the Japanese mainland when the war ended. He was a retired Superintendent of Postal Operations at the Lakehurst Post Office, retiring after 38 years of service. He also managed the post offices in Whitings and at the Lakehurst Naval Air Station. His life was dedicated to service to his community and his family as he held many volunteer positions in his community for over fifty years. He was an exempt member, past President and Secretary of the Lakehurst Volunteer Fire Company. He was a long- time board member, trustee, and pillar of the Lakehurst United Methodist Church. He served on the Lakehurst Planning and Land Use Boards. Robert served as Vice-President of the Lakehurst Board of Education, was an umpire and coach in the Lakehurst Little League. He was devoted to his family, home and dogs, as well as his Phillies and Penn State football. Robert was respected by all who knew him.

He was predeceased by his father Austin Morris in 1939 and his mother Florence Carr Morris in 1966. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Shirley Temple Morris, his son Robert J. Morris, Lakehurst, his daughter Mrs. Susan Steinard, Manchester, a son-in-law Kevin Steinard, daughter-in-law Marie Key, grandchildren Jason, Brian, Jessica, and Robert A. II, and several nieces and nephews.

DeGraff Lakehurst Funeral Home, 119 Union Avenue, Lakehurst is in charge of arrangements, which include a viewing for family and friends on Sunday August 19th 2-4 & 7-9PM and a funeral at the Lakehurst United Methodist Church, Pine Street on Monday at 10AM.. Burial will be in the family plot in Roadside Cemetery, Route 37, Manchester. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Lakehurst United Methodist Church, 204 Elm Street, Lakehurst.
