Daniel Soriano Obituary

Daniel C. Soriano, Jr., Esq.

AGE: 76 • Raritan

Daniel C. Soriano, Jr., Esq. left this life on Tuesday, December 23, 2014 surrounded by those he loved. Born on October 26, 1938 to Ida Carlino and Daniel Soriano Sr., Daniel or "Danny" grew up in Raritan Borough. He was a graduate of Somerville High School Class of 1956 and a very proud member of the Somerville High School Athletic Hall of Fame, having played for the undefeated football team of 1953. Danny went on to graduate from Brown University in 1960, and the University of Pennsylvania Law School in 1963. From 1962 through 1963, he served as the Editor of the University of Pennsylvania Law Review. While he was studying law in Philadelphia, Danny met Judith Seamen, and the two were wed in 1962.

Never one to be away from his beloved hometown of Raritan very long, Daniel returned to the "Friendly Town of Friendly People" with his bride Judy to establish a home, a family, and a bevy of very close friends. After having practiced law briefly on Wall Street with the firm of Cadwalader, Wickersham & Taft, Daniel cast his career anchor in Somerville and, in 1968 with his partner Arthur Mott, formed the general law practice of Mott & Soriano. In 1990, Daniel's son Geoffrey joined the practice, and shortly thereafter Soriano & Soriano, Esqs. was established. Throughout his five-decade long legal career, Daniel served so very many clients in myriad areas of the law. He was the Raritan Borough Municipal Court Prosecutor from 1968 through 1973 and the Borough Attorney for Raritan in 1969 and again from 1971 through 1973. Having developed an expertise in education law, Daniel served as the Attorney for the Bridgewater-Raritan Regional School District from 1975 until 2005. He also represented numerous builders and developers throughout Somerset and Hunterdon Counties and served as lender's review counsel for many local banks. Daniel was a member of the Somerset County, New Jersey State, and American Bar Associations.

Daniel was long-time member of Raritan Valley Country Club where he played golf, tennis and a vicious hand of gin rummy. He served numerous terms on the Country Club's Board of Governors, was Club President from 1978 through 1980, and chaired the Legal Committee for decades. In 2013, Raritan Valley Country Club named him an Honorary Life Member, an achievement of which he was, indeed, proud. A loyal alumnus of Brown University, Daniel was a steadfast fan of the Brown Bears football team. The tailgates which he organized—particularly those prior to the games played at Princeton, Penn and Columbia—are legend. He was also an extremely ardent supporter of all of the athletic endeavors undertaken by his children and grandchildren. "Pop" was a fixture on the sidelines or in the stands, cheering on his favorites when physically able.

Daniel was predeceased by his wife, Judith, in 1999. He is survived by and leaves to cherish his memory his daughter, Angela Soriano of Huntington, New York; his son and daughter-in-law, Geoffrey and Katherine Soriano of Bridgewater, New Jersey; his twin grandchildren, Hayley and Griffin Soriano who gave him endless joy and of whom he was most proud; his long-time companion, golf partner, card player and confidant, Judith Quick of Bedminster, New Jersey; and that bevy of friends developed over 76 years who participated in the configuration of his storied life.

Daniel's friends are invited to join his family as they celebrate his life at Bongiovi Funeral Home, 416 Bell Avenue, Raritan, New Jersey 08869 (908 725-1887) on Sunday, December 28, 2014 from 2:00 to 6:00 p.m. A funeral mass will be held Monday, December 29, 2014, 10:30 a.m. at the Church of Saint Ann, 45 Anderson Street, Raritan, New Jersey 08869. Interment shall follow immediately at St. Bernard Cemetery, 551 Route 28, Bridgewater, New Jersey 08807. Daniel's family extends tremendous gratitude to the staff of Robert Wood Johnson Hospital Somerset for the excellent care and compassion extended by them.

I recall Danny from SHS football practice and learning the meaning of being "faked out" during a tackling practice. I also learned what a great guy he was and how he continued that throughout his life. And was there a better smile anywhere.
