Eugene Louis Hubka

Milton, PA - Eugene Louis Hubka, (Gene), age 93, of Milton, PA, passed away peacefully in the company of his family on Sunday, December 3, 2017 in Manahawkin, NJ. Gene was born and raised in Perth Amboy, NJ to the late Anthony and Violet Hubka. He was predeceased by his beloved wife of 57 years, Martha Jane Reed Hubka.

Gene was a three-sport star in football, basketball and baseball during his days at Perth Amboy High School. He went on to play football and baseball for the Bison at Bucknell University being inducted into Bucknell's Athletic Hall of Fame in 1987. During his time at Bucknell, he was also a member of the V-12 officer-training program for the US Marine Corps during WW II. After the war, Gene continued his academic and athletic career at Bucknell graduating in 1947. An offer from the Pittsburgh Steelers led to two seasons with the team. He had fond memories of his association with the Steelers.

Gene began his teaching career at Camden High School, NJ and continued at Plainfield High School, NJ. He worked there as a history teacher and later as a guidance counselor along with coaching football for over 30 years. During this time, he positively influenced the lives of many young people. He also refereed football and basketball and umpired baseball. Upon retirement, he enjoyed playing golf and working with wood, in particular building stylish birdhouses that he generously shared with family and friends.

He is survived by twin sons, Terry and wife Mary of Bridgton, ME and Tom and wife Judith of Portland, OR and a daughter, Nancy (Hofmann) and husband Dave of Cedar Run, NJ. He is also survived by five granddaughters, who he called his 'little friends': Sarah, Rachel, Amy, Laura and Emily and six great grandchildren, or his 'littlest friends': Daniel, Cameron, Thomas, Zoe, Bryce and Lyla. A remembrance gathering is being planned to honor and celebrate the life of Eugene Hubka at Bucknell University, Lewisburg, PA on Saturday, January 27th.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to: The Plainfield High School Student Scholarship Fund, "PHS '64" in Gene Hubka's name. The website is www.cfnj.org. By mail, the address is: Community Foundation of NJ PO Box 338 Morristown, NJ 07963-338.

Arrangements are under the direction of Ocean County Cremation Service, Forked River.
