Luigi Stellato Obituary

Luigi T. Stellato

AGE: 72 • Neshanic Station

Luigi T. Stellato, 72, entered into eternal life on Wednesday, April 17, 2013, at Hunterdon Medical Center in Raritan Township with his loving family by his side. Born in Caserta, Italy, he grew up in Italy prior to coming to the United States in 1956, residing in Perth Amboy, and shortly after he became a US citizen. He settled to Neshanic Station in 1980. Luigi worked as a barber in Perth Amboy prior to opening his own styling shop, Luigi's Styling Shop, in Metuchen, which he has owned and operated for the past 42 years. He was a member of The Tripoli Club in Perth Amboy. Luigi loved gardening, making wine, salami and Italian sausages for his family, playing the harmonica and making everyone laugh. He was a "jack of all trades, and master of some." He was a parishioner of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Roman Catholic Church in Three Bridges.

Besides his parents, Luigi was predeceased by his twin brother, Tommaso Stellato, at the age of 16, and son-in-law Scott Oldenburg. Luigi is survived by his beloved wife of 50 years, Antonia "Toni" (Tarantino) Stellato, with whom he joined hands in marriage on October 13, 1962; four loving daughters, Angela and her husband Keith Walters, Camille Oldenburg, Lisa Stellato, and Anna and her husband Michael Gaspari; dear siblings, Sebastiano Stellato, Catherine Golino, Maria Stellato, Frank Stellato, and Pauline Ribeiro. He will be deeply missed by 9 cherished grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and extended family.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend visitation at Countryside Funeral Home, 724 Route 202 North, Three Bridges, NJ 08887, on Friday, April 19 from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. A funeral liturgy will be held on Saturday, April 20 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Roman Catholic Church, 105 Summer Road, Three Bridges, NJ 08887. Luigi will be entombed in the mausoleum at St. Magdalen Cemetery & Mausoleum in Flemington. Memorial contributions may be made in Luigi's name to RHSO (In memory of Scott Oldenburg), PO Box 118, Pittstown, NJ 08867, or Autism Speaks, 1060 State Road 2nd Fl, Princeton, NJ 08540. I was just talking about Luigi the other day while getting a haircut. Haircuts and camaraderie just aren't the same. You are truly missed. May God bless your soul. Thanks for all the great years Luigi.

My husband introduced me to Luigi and Mia in 2010. Right away Luigi was telling me jokes and stories. I will miss him. I will miss getting my lollipop bouquet from him. Molly will miss hanging out in the shop (Molly is our dog. Luigi enjoyed her & let her hang out in the shop while my husband got his hair cut.) Hugs to Mia! Hugs to Luigi's family.

Having been out of the country the last three weeks, I and my family were deeply saddened to learn of Luigi's passing. Like so many others, Luigi cut my hair for almost 40 years and that of my son while he lived in N.J.
People always looked at me wierdly wondering why I traveled from Montclair to Metuchen the last 35 years to get my haircut. I would just smile saying he is a very close friend who I want to be with. Obviously he was a great barber too but that wasn't the reason I went. It was to laugh and cajole; to spoof and tease; to share family news, sports, jokes ... whatever. In my younger years, we'd go out on after the shop closed on Thursday night.
Matt, Sherry and Lauren will miss you Luigi. Toni, Mia and family - our deepest condolences. But sleep well knowing that heaven is laughing.
There's a lot of jokes they haven't heard up there. Especially the one about the elephant up in the tree.

I have lost a very dear and long time friend. Luigi had been my barber for over fifty years in Perth Amboy and Metuchen. Upon returning to New Jersey from time to time I would make it a point to stop in the shop in Metuchen and spend some time with Luigi talking football and telling jokes. I will never forget my dear friend. Rest in peace Luigi. My deepest and sincere sympathy to his wife Toni, children and the Stellato family.

I was Luigi's Barber Supply man for the past 35 years. My Grandfather Herman Bachmann was Luigi's first supply man, my uncle Marty followed for a few years them my dad Pat Sweeney and then me. On my first week on the job at age 20 I took an order for custom inprinted pens for holiday hand outs. I spelled Luigi Louigi by mistake. Luigi saw the mistake and said " how you spell Luigi?" and smiled. Thinking I would have to pay for my mistake, heat came over my body. Louie just smiled in that special way he was known for and paid me for the mistaken printred pens. He was just a good guy. That gesture got Luigi favors from me for the rest of our relationship. I would do anything for Luigi.I will miss his joke of the week and his warmth and hospitality. In later years I would stop by just for the jokes. There will never be another Luigi Stelato. Check out this story on line it puts it all together,

Louie logic..one of the greatest sounds my ears could hear. Luigi cut THREE generations of my family from my father to my son. When my Dad was sick, Louie would come the house, when I was in play, Louie would style my hair and when my son came to be of age, Louie would cut his hair also. The spirit in the shop was one where you left your troubles outside and enjoyed the atmosphere; the bickering with Mia, the endless jokes and, of course Louie Logic!!

Louie cut my family's hair for 40 years- Going to Louie was more than a haircut, it was an experience- I used to call him the most popular man in Metuchen- So quick with a joke, a loaf of bread or even a beer at closing time. Always smiling and laughing- Everyone left Louie feeling better than when they walked in- A true old time small town barber and gentlemen. God must have needed a haircut- RIP my friend

Luigi has lived 2 doors away from me for over 15 years. Luigi and Toni have been perfect neighbors for all these years. I and my family will miss his happy face, and his friendly manner. Luigi, I my wife Sherry and 3 daughters will miss you. Please rest in peace. I didn't know all of this time about your shop in Metuchen because I attended St Joseph's High School also in Metuchen. What a small world. Everyone in our small neighborhood will miss you.

Luigi was the best. Warm, personable and hilarious! I used to tell him his shop would have been the best reality TV show in history. To his family, he spoke of you lovingly every time he cut my hair. God now has a wonderful personal barber. Peace, Tony Akey

RIP Luigi. He wasn't just a barber, but a friend and mentor. If you went to his barbershop you know that you weren't just getting a haircut, but something much more. It was a hang out with your friends, a moment that people got away from everyday problems. Luigi is a pure example of what a little town like Metuchen is all about family, friends, and community. That bright smile that he brought everyday at the shop was very special to witness. He had a charisma and energy that everyone fed off of. You saw the pictures of his customers over the years around the shop and it made me realize the impact and inspiration he had in so many peoples' lives. Luigi truly is a one in a million character that will be missed dearly by me, my family and the entire central New Jersey area. He taught me so much over the years and I am forever grateful for what he has meant in my life. I can still hear him saying to me "stick to the books kid". Thank you for everything Luigi.

Luigi had been my barber for the last twenty-five years and was the first professional barber to cut our son's hair.

He was a happy fellow with a flavorful Italian accent and much down-to-earth advice (on matters pertaining to gardening and otherwise).

I came to the shop this morning for a hair cut and was surprised to learn of his demise from the obituary taped to the front window.

While I was there, several others arrived. One gentleman said Luigi had cut his hair for forty years. A real estate agent came by and said Luigui had cut his hair since was six years old.

It was always a joy talking to Luigi and listening to him hold court in his barber shop.

He will be remembered and missed.

May he rest in peace.

When you went to Luigi, you got more than a haircut. A master storyteller. Downtown Metuchen will never be the same. (HMC Catholic Chaplain and childhood customer)

Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him. May the souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God rest in peace. Amen.

We are very sad to hear of Luigi's passing. My kids and I had the honor and privlege to spend an evening with him and his beautiful wife Toni, Camille and Mike when he took us out to dinner, he made us feel like one of his own and we will never forget that, he told my kids to call him Pop-Pop. What a fantastic human being he was and will always be. Heaven certainly gained another angel and he is reunited with Scott again. Much Love to the whole family, Ann, Amanda & Danny Fisher
