Helen Shreve Obituary

Helen Kammerman Shreve

Bridgewater

Helen Kammerman Shreve, nee Henderson, died peacefully on Tuesday, Sept. 17, 2013 at Arbor Glen Retirement Community in Bridgewater, NJ. She was born in Somerville, NJ, on Feb. 18, 1915, daughter of the late Harry Nelson Henderson and Henrietta Hantz Henderson. In 1932 she graduated top of her Somerville High School class and attended the New Jersey College for Women (now Douglas), majoring in French and Spanish, graduating in 1936. From that fall until June 1941, she worked as a translator and file clerk in the Foreign Dept. of the Vicks Chemical Co. in NYC. In December 1939, Helen married her college sweetheart, Arthur C. Kammerman (Rutgers '37), formerly of Atlantic City, NJ. They settled in Westfield, NJ and joined St. Paul's Episcopal Church. She was a member of the Echo Lake Country Club, the Westfield Tennis Club, and the Westfield Women's Club. Always an avid reader, she also especially enjoyed playing bridge with friends, annual family vacations in Brigantine, NJ, and, later, winter holidays with her grandsons in the Florida Keys. In retirement, she and Arthur cruised the Mediterranean, the Caribbean, Alaska, and the Amazon.

She was predeceased by Arthur who died in 1992; her second husband, Richmond "Pat" Bentley Shreve who died in 2001 (with whom she spent happy years at Arbor Glen and travelled to Nova Scotia and the west coast to visit family and friends), and her brother, Paul Hantz Henderson of Martinsville and Somerville who died in 2003. Surviving are her brother-in-law, Thomas Charles Shreve and his wife Barbara of Bridgewater, NJ, and her children and step-children: daughter, Julie K. Hogenaer and fiance, Lawrence Whatley of San Antonio, TX; daughter, Joan K. Grashof and husband Dr. John of Blairsville, GA; son, Charles Henderson "Kip" Kammermann of Fernandina Beach, FL; and step-sons, Richmond B. Shreve Jr. and wife Marguerite Chandler of Cape May Point, NJ; Thomas A. Shreve and wife Mary of Oregon; and William R. Shreve and wife Johanna of California; nieces: Christine Henderson Rose of Martinsville, NJ; Harriet Lee Henderson of Hillsborough, NJ; Jane Henderson Glick of Cherry Hill NJ; and Sue Ellen Henderson Tepper of Flanders, NJ. Also surviving are four grandchildren: Jeffrey C. Grashof and wife Kathleen of Dunwoody, GA; Michael F. Grashof and wife Teresa of Tequesta, FL; Dr. Daniel O. Hogenauer, Jr. and wife Dr. Julie Cekliniak of Falmouth, ME; and Arthur J. Hogenauer of San Antonio, TX. She is also survived by seven great grandchildren: Ansley, Kendall and Jack Grashof of FL; Elizabeth and Lauren Grashof of GA; and Matthew and Maxwell Hogenauer of ME, and numerous step-grandchildren and step-great grandchildren.

Interment will be in the garth of St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Westfield, NJ. Arrangements by Bruce C. VanArsdale Funeral Home, 111 N. Gaston Ave. Somerville, NJ.
